She's the perfect example for me of the power of By Dancers For Dancers--I'd vaguely heard her name but didn't know much of anything about her before volume 1 came out, whereupon I was smitten!

Just to let everyone who hasn't seen Nanna before, she is amazing.

I actually learned this drum solo at a workshop she did it Albuquerque and she is a sweetheart too!

I can't wait! She is one of my favorite dancers, absolutely lovely.

Anala, she is *ours* (San Francisco/Oakland area, yeah!), but she is from Albuquerque originally.

I am happy to see she has a DVD coming out, she is a completely wonderful dancer in every way.

I must abmit to being "allergic" to claims of "legend" for someone only slightly known outside her local area and certainly unknown outside America.

I saw her dance in Amayas show a few years back in Albuq. and she was mesmerizing. A style all her own. Who was her instructor here in NM. Anybody know?

I wouldn't say she is unknown outside of America. She is one of a very small number of American dancers to be sponsored to do a performance tour of China, among other things.

To me, legend means someone who has been around for a long while and who has a deep and original talent. People who see Nanna perform think about her dance afterwards because it is so unique. She is a true artist. And she has had a hand in training almost every big name, professional belly dancer in this region of the country.

I don't think that you necessarily need to have had a great agent pimping you or to have been featured in mainstream outlets to be considered a legend.

I must add I had heard of her before By Dancers For Dancers. I was dependent on youtube mostly, and I am not sure there were clips of hers, but I recall many dancers of California and some other US states citing her as an influence in either interviews or personal sections on their website.
I am recalling Amaya saying she is a great fellow dancer, but I could mix some things up because at that time, I really was not knowledgeable about the US bellydance scene.
Someone said she is not as famous in the US as she would deserve to be when By Dancers For Dancers first came out and people suddenly went crazy over her in the forums. I am guessing that was because of little exposure in the mainstream channels, and I must say she IS one of my favourite US dancers. For her style and uniqueness.

She is in California now. She came by Flo's studio in the summer. She also taught at OP a few years back.

Thank you. I can think of a few dancers who are very well known thanks to the power of the internet and their publicity, but who are not wonderful dancers in any way.

Nanna teaches in the East Bay and San Francisco. She has performed at many venues in the Bay Area over the years, I remember her dancing at Amira's for many years. I think her website mentions who her first teahcer was.

I would love to reach Nanna for info on when and how she will have the dvds available.. I get it they will not be released under the Cheeky Girls label, hence the info is not on Michelle's catalogue any more.
On Nanna's website, under contact there will be no email, and the automatic application sending her an email does not work for my Mac at least (not printing the email adress, but having such an automatic device is not good for non Windows user by the way.. many sellers I would like to contact, no option because I cannot use this device; those not publishing their email adress often are not that often on youtube either.. what a pity!!)

Nanna taught a workshop in Albuquerque last weekend & performed with a band Sunday evening. She was fabulous of course.

Oh, why did they go and change the business agreement! ,f:: I've been waiting for Nanna dvd's for ages. Actually, Michelle said (on tribe.net) they should be out in Sept, correct?

ya that's what I am thinking too... I wished they had not for these 2, but maybe for future ones I have not prepared myself to get in summer at the latest :( you can tell I am so selfish when it comes to dvds :)

Hey guys

Don't panic. I am done with the edits, and am just waiting for Nanna to get back from her summer vacation to look them over. The release date will be up to her and will depend on if she wants a re-edit or not.

It has been a slow process since we have shot it, re-shot it, edited it, and re-edited it 3 times so far. Plus I was sick with pregnancy,which put all projects behind 3 months. But don't worry, there will be announcements when it is ready.

Difficult to say an exact release date, though. Collaborations take a little longer and also I know Nanna would rather release nothing than something she isn't 100% happy with.

Alas I missed the workshop, dancing for a pre wedding dinner (fun). She rocked the Sunday show & looked elegant in a copper costume.

Thanks for asking. I don't know how to approach that one, since I technically only "produce" the stuff that my label is on. If my label is on it then it means that I have been involved with not only the shooting and editing, but also with the choice of content and the script. If someone simply hires me to help them achieve their vision, it isn't going to look like something that is on the Cheeky Girls label.

It isn't that I'm not proud of my freelance projects or anything, it is just that I don't make the final artistic decisions and am just the technical person who deals with the camera and editing. I will make casual announcements about freelance projects as they are released on message boards, but I won't be advertising them on the Cheeky Girls site or implying that I have "produced" or "created" them myself.

I can see how that changes a lot whether one has a degree of control/collaboration over the product or not..
I hope you will let us know on tribe or hear whenever you free lance produce something :)
