REVIEW Dynamic Drum Solo: Technique & Choreography with Sadie

My copy of Sadie's new Dynamic Drum Solo dropped through my mail box a couple of days ago...wow! I want that blue costume!

The first menu you come across is well set out.

When you click onto the Chapter list the combinations are all in separate chapters so you can jump to things easily

You are then taken into an introduction and warm up with Sadie. The outfit she is in is simple and allows you to see her quite clearly.

After introducing the DVD she then proceeds to a very thorough warm up, with lots of stretches and bends...I could not help but chuckle when she got down on the floor and started tensing her glutes alternatively, but she explained that this was needed as it would be needed later on in the DVD.

After a thorough stretching she takes you into the first combination slowly breaking it down then repeating it a few time then again without the music, then again a few times with the music - I liked that she did that, she didn't practice it once to the music but repeated it before moving on.
The first combo was simple enough but as I watched they seemed to increase in speed and complexity with locking and popping, but I liked how she kept mentioning that if you can't do the move upto speed, then stop now and drill it. As I watched it, I couldn't help but compare it with another HMC release, Amar's Mastering the Dance, although not drum solo, the way the DVD has been set out was that she taught combinations and then taught her choreography based on the combinations, on Sadie's DVD she just teaches the choreography straight through, but it should not be too hard to adapt them for your own needs.

she then takes you through a cool down. (I didn't get that far...)

The performance in the end is in a gorgeous Leopard costume, but I kept wishing it was in that gorgeous blue one.

I do have to point out that the screenshots were taken at 1024*768 resolution...but I feel the filming quality should have been higher...I had the same problem with Amar's DVD

Lol that training bra kept annoying me...some of it you could see the black underneath...I think it may have just been a normal black bra covered in gold stretch sequins

yeah it does, it looks good and does the job. she had her mic tucked down the back of it lol which I am surprised did not fall out with all the bending and glute squeezing while down on the floor.

I liked how could see her legs and whole body and how in front of the mirror could see her whole body, I dont like it when instructors teach in front of a mirror but you only see their back, in this she does actually face you some of the time

This is one of those videos I work on segment, by segment for weeks and weeks! A great challenge for any dancer. I have found the drum solo music on this tape very, very difficult. I've even resorted to writing out the patterns and there are not many repeats :)

If you are looking to challenge your body and have patience this is for you!

Thanks for the info! I wouldn't mind having this dvd. Sadie is an excellent dancer. I have her "Sultry Slow Moves."

I agree with Sabra-she keeps you challenged. If you try to do the moves correctly, they're very internal and you could take weeks polishing each one.

Um, Sabra, I hope you won't take offense to this, but you're named after my favorite store bought Hummus brand-Sabra! Does your name mean anything? I wonder why the company chose that name for their yummy, yummy product. Their hummus really is good. You should try it! It's at most Giant Eagle and Kroger stores.

Not only am I named after hummus, but I also have a Sabra Gin too!!!

Now here's the story - Sabra can mean (and I'm sure there are other defs) patience and woman of Iranian descent. Back in the mid 90s I just liked the sound of it. About 8 years after I was using the name I was hired to perform for an Arabic party. The band was brought to Rochester, NY from Toronto. The oud player pulled me aside and said "Um, Sabra do you know what your name means in Arabic?" And I mentioned the above. He said "We'll we use it as a term for a woman who stays with a man who treats her very, very badly!" Oh, great! By that time I thought it was a bit too late to change :)

That bra bugged me as well, it looks a bit amateurish, and cobbled together with that black sports bra underneath. It looks good in your screenshot though, who says the camera never lies! And at least it's not crushed velour.

Aside from my petty costuming quibbles this really is a great dvd, similar standard to Sadie's first drum solo, but much less expensive. It's extremely challenging, but I was lucky enough to do a workshop with Sadie last summer where we learned this choreo, so it's a great refresher for me to have the dvd- I didn't have a hope of remembering all this after a 2.5 hour class!
