Thread: Ranya Renee Baladi 2 dvd set!

OK, so the teleconference with Nabawy will be this coming Wednesday evening Aug. 12th, 10pm Eastern time.

Conference will end shortly after 11pm Eastern time. (Join us early at 9:45pm for meet-and-greet!) All are welcome to join in, whether or not you have the DVD. :-) You can register ($15) at Bellydance New York City - Ranya Renee & Company - Belly Dance Classes and Peformances . Even if you can't participate live, you can still register (no later than the conference date) and get access to the recording afterwards. Contact me with any questions at ranya at ranya.net .

Nabawy will talk about baladi music, culture, and you can also ask him about his days in Cairo playing for street weddings and at nightclubs for famous dancers. You can submit your burning questions in advance or ask during the conference!

You are going to love talking with Nabawy, he is so generous with his knowledge, his English is great because he's been here a long time, and he is just an all-around kind, cool person. I couldn't have made the Baladi dvds without him as such a steady resource. Glad he lives here in New York!

CBarros-- yes, you should pick up that accordion again!!!!

I wanted to mention how useful the talk about arm paths in the Baladi dvd is for me, for I tend to do as little as possible with my arms, for I'm not really sure what and how. Only listening to you talking about what role arms play, plus seeing you do it was incredibly helpful!

Plus I have to thank you for the vertical jewel. I had never seen this move before! Even though my favourite remains the other jewel, this move is definitely very interesting!

Actually I think Outi of Cairo may have given me that name for that move--the vertical jewel... she is a great technician! I was doing it before but i didn't really have a name for it. There are so many ways to experiment with that genre of deep, close-to-the-spine loopy movement. Enjoy!

So excited!! I just ordered my copy last night! I am counting the hours before it arrives in the mail!

Just seeing the trailer and listening to Ranya Renee explain the many intracacies of Baladi, gave me serious goose bumps. I can't tell you how many times I played the trailer over and over again. I was completely in awe of her knowledge and amazing stage presence.

Zana, that would be so so great! Even with my innate "gift" of extreme procrastination, I just might be able to plan a year out. Ironically, I do have a regular (music, not dance) gig the first weekend of October. Need to suss it all out.

I love that we have to go to Texas to hang out. ;)

the modern egyptian is also wonderful - can't wait for the last in the series that has been delayed - but I also love my performace dvd that came with the all in one offer

I love love love love love this DVD. I got it for Christmas and it is phenomenal!

Which 60$ set did you come across?

Beledi double dvd, Modern Egyptian and Classical, with two free performance DVD's.

I have bought the offer because I thought prices mightn't stay that low forever plus international shipping was a bargain... but the classical dvd isn't out, yet, so I'm waiting...! I bought, paid and got so far two dvds and one performance dvd.

I learned the modern choreo and also performed it, I think it's a very beautiful choreo, and I found the baladi set to be very true, useful and an encouragement to improvise (but in a way that it enables you for a "qualified impro", that is you have backed up what you do, and I feel better now when I do things I also did before, but now I know why it matches). Since I'm really infected by the retro "golden era" trend, I'm eagerly awaiting the classical dvd!

It was also very interesting to see the live performance in the Lafayette grill, the mix of American cabaret and Egyptian style.

btw do you know Orit Maftsir's classical oriental (I think she calls it "Orientalism workshop) dvd? she teaches Samia Gamal and the likes movements, and explains the difference between Samia, Taheya, Naima.. very nice dvd! PM me if you're interested, I got it used, but can check where my friend got it from.

the dvd I bought used is a Russian workshop. she speaks English, simultaneously translated to Russian. The English audio stream is audible. She explains about the creation of the classical raks sharki style in the movies. How relatively European looking women with fair skin became stars, how the representation (according to her knowledge) was more the creation of an orientalist fantasy for Westerners stationed in Egypt. She explained the difference in style and emulated Naima, Samia and Taheya really well. Then she performs movements and combinations she considers typical, and the students follow her.
Audio and video is reasonably good. If I remember who gave it to me I will ask her where she got it!

Just bought it and should be getting it in the mail in about a week! From what I've heard, it's great. I'll try to post a quickie review once I've gone through it.

Also bought it , there ain't lots of beledi style DVD's and the fact that there is explanations about the style and not only a choreography thrown there... Luv the concept.

Because I'm in canada I don't think I can tell you more about it after I'll received within 2 weeks though... can't wait!

I LOVE this dvd! The props for posture explanations were cute, the music and rhythm breakdowns were wonderful, technique is simply explained, and the improv and practice drills are fun. I really enjoyed the very informative beginning. I've never had any problems recognizing the different rhythms and sections of baladi, but I've never had anyone explain the names of the rhythms and the history, tradition, and types of movement that is attached to that music. This is THE best belly dance dvd I've ever seen!

Ok, I was thinking of buying this, but now that I have read this thread, I am definitely going to buy it!!!!
