dvds that focus on rhythm & movement?

what do you ladies recommend for a dvd that focuses mainly on rhythm and the movement associated with that particular rhythm (not just drill this, drill that). it can be 'workout' or not, i don't really care as long as it does what it's supposed to.

rayna's beledi seems like a good choice from dinavienna's review. any others?

Re: dvds that focus on rhythm & movement?

Have you tried Neon's Rhythms workout?
There is a Tamra Henna dvd I hve so far only heard of - but many people seem to like it, with the caveat of it being set to pretty distinct combinations rather than general rhythm/movement fit if I get it right what you are searching for?
Tamra Henna s Arabic Rhythms Vol 2 is soon to be released if you are interested in her program despite it focusing on few combinations only.. I ve heard people who like it a lot for Tamra Henna s lovely style (which I second), others were disappointed. I ve so far been unsure on whether to get it for the price.
I do love Neon s rhythms. She presents nice movements (although not strictly Egyptian style like Ranya - it s Neon style, she s pretty distinct in her movements I think), to a large variety of Arab drum rhythms. It s a 3 hour program.

Then I got a hint from Priscilla - I would have to check the name but it is something like Nesma or Nejwa Arabic Rhythms(sorry my name memory is so messed up). I saw the review and decided for getting it very soon. It s in Arabic with subtitles, and supposed to feature many different rhythms with different movements to them (often folkloric if I got Priscilla right)!

LOL can you believe it my first guess was right ;)
    it s Nesma:

this dvd looks really fine IMO.

I proudly recommend my new release which focuses on improvisation.

It contains 3 follow along segments which dancers are finding very useful that help you dance to portions of a song - completely improv.

This dvd was 2 years in the making and, features live music from percussonist Liron Peled of Raquy and the Cavemen and Armenian guitarist Sean Blackman.

The dvd is designed for dancers who perform to Middle Eastern audiences, it's authentic (traditional), raqs sharqi, we are really proud of it.
Plus, proceeds go to charity!! In two months it's already been used by working dancers in Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Russia and throughout the U.S.

Read more about the dvd (and my bio) on the site below.

    Respectfully,
    Lana Detroit Bellydance Home

There's also the Heartbeat of Belly Dance with Jenna, that goes over rhythms.

And Saida and Mario Kirlis DVDs goes over rhythms. There are some excerpts on youtube that look really impressive:

I got both Saida 2dvd sets for about 30 dollars altogether through ebay (new) an Argentinean seller..
someone posted on another thread here Argentinean music or something.. the thread cannot be old.
I thought that could have been my seller.
Type "Saida ebay" and the dvd title I cannot remember.
Her dvds are great, also to practice Spanish :)

Re: dvds that focus on rhythm & movement?

Hmm I believe I have the rhythms one (the first one I think - Saida in a green costume). My sis has the other one (full choreography I think).
I need to thoroughly watch both! It s been too long I have them, and neglected them :)
There are long performances, entire gala shows, on both dvds if I remember correctly! For the price the Argentinean offers them they are amazing value for the money.
I was satisfied having taken the first one though. I like the rhythm education most in all dvds covering rhythms and combinations :)

well i just FINALLY bought some WDNY dvds and i'm waiting to see how much money i'll have this weekend to buy some more (something always comes up :( )
it's so tough gettin rid of dvds though! i don't even have that much time to watch everything (i haven't even watched everything that i have) but i hate to get rid of it although i do prefer the 'classroom' experience..

    Hi ,
I'm a "baby belly" with a little extra cash and want to treat myself with a few bellydance dvds. I have a fairly decent collection so far but I have to tell you, I was blown away by Saida & Mario's video clip.

Would you consider the dvd a ggod choice for a beginner that can handle some of the basic moves. ( i was smiling as I watched the clip because I remember doing variation of some the moves on the dance floor when I used to go out dancing)

Any input you all can give would be greatly appreciated

I have a few dvds so I can recognise a rhythm by the way a dancer moves.

Souhail Kaspar's dvd is very good. It's probably the only one I've seen to teach it in an improvised way ie movements for doum, suk, tak, drum rolls etc and also movements for melody instruments like oud, kanun, violin.

Souhail Kaspar | Near East Music | Rhythm and Movement DVD

Hadia vol 3 is good as well for rhythms

Yasmina Ramsy's Nightclub performance is a good all round dvd. Small section on how to do drum solo endings.

Thanks to all who made great suggestions and shared the clips.

Wow. I'm in a trance by both artist and wish I could get them all the DVD's.
But I have to really limit my purchaces for for due to:
*I gotta make my finances stretch.

*With me still being a newbie, I don't want to get in over my head and strain something before I even get a chance to perform outside of my livingroom.

Can I ask another quick question, Do you think that Souhail Kaspar's dvd would be something that I best just work my way up to?

I say yes; Souhail has a very specific technique which requires a good ear and assumes good technique. If you were my student I'd say start with Jenna 'cause she's really great for the price, and when you outgrow that one look into Nesma or Souhail if necessary.

Thanks so much for your honesty Nasila. It's so easy to get caught up and end up buying more dvd than you need. I'll just pace myselfand do the dvd's at my level one at a time.

Re: dvds that focus on rhythm & movement?

FYI, I just met one of Suhail Kaspar School of Arabic Percussion's certified instructors, Viktoria Carter, this weekend.

Just from having a 10 minute chat with her about everything else than DVDs I've decided to get the DVD - and pursue 1on1 "seminars" with Viktoria and Suhail in the future. Just a wonderfully generous strain of thought in that school. One of my students is a Suhail devotee as well as a dancer. I tell you, he's got it going on!

Is it the spring or is it the blooming of bellydance that's making me so chipper, guys? :D
