Favorite Veil DVDs?
Who has veil dvds out? Can you describe something about your favorite? (I don't need a full review - but I'd love to hear more than you just know it exists, if you know what I mean)
Thanks!

Re: Favorite Veil DVDs?
I actually just bought two of them and they arrived in the mail yesterday. I already have Petite Jamilla's Double Veil one which I thought was just so-so.
I bought Sarah Skinner's veil DVD and also Aziza's veil DVD. I'm almost finished watching Sarah's and I haven't started Aziza's yet.
I have to say, I have two other Skinner DVD's and in general I'm not a huge fan of them. Can't say it's one reason or another, but I really liked this DVD of hers. It's pretty basic though. I can't say I learned more than one or two new small things, but anything new is great :) She's also very informative about types of veils, sizes, fabrics, etc. The DVD also includes a choreo at the end, which is where I paused the DVD last night before bed.
I'll watch Aziza's tonight and let you know what I think :)

Re: Favorite Veil DVDs?
Sarah's and Aziza's are my favorites!
I also am not the biggest fan of Sarah's other two dvds. Maybe they need to grow on me when I am actually doing them. The Turkish one is very far from the Turkish style dancing I know through my in-law family. And also not really Turkish Rom, IMO. I guess American fantasy style of Turkish. But it does look nice. The 7 veils one is a choreography that even the absolute beginner should be able to do. it is beautiful, but of course very very mainstream-y and an orientalist fantasy on your dance for "your sultan". It is a great introduction to bellydance for the general public, but left me wanting a bit more, dance-wise. I think her opulent Motion will do just that for me :)
Thinking of it, 7 Veils is actually the one bellydance dvd I'd give as a gift for someone with no dance background, but interest in bellydancing. I think it was advertised as a Valentine's suprise for one's partner in Barnes and Noble - it is really perfect for this purpose! But a tiny bit too "orientalist" for my personal taste.
So back to her Veil dvd (the blue costume cover) - it is gorgeous. It is nice to just watch in one go. It is much longer than any other, more than 2 hours I think. But it will not get boring any minute.
It starts out with fabrics, then the actual dance instruction covers many wraps, unwraps, spins, circles, combinations. There is also a choreography, which, this time, i found really very very very nice!
She covers pretty much everything one could wish for. I'd had Aziza's before, and liked it very much. She shows many combinations, too. But hers is only about 50 minutes long.
If my memory does not play a trick on me, there is probably not much on Aziza's that is not also on Sarah's. If you're on a tight budget, definitely get Sarah's first. It should be around 12 or 13 $ on the WDNY site, with free shipping. It is so much longer than Aziza's!
Well Aziza's I really liked watching, too, her style is just very inspiring, so if you can, I think it is one of the IAMEDs that is worth their money (aside Sadie's, Zahra Zuhair and Artemis Murat, most importantly, IMO). BUt for the length it certainly is pricey. VERY. But I just love Aziza's style and personality as an instructor. And her grace and style in dancing - her veil performance at the end is one of my favorite American style veil dances EVER. I was glad I purchased the dvd just for seeing it.
Aside these 3 (Sarah's 7 Veils being included) - hm I know Michelle Joyce will release one, but it was delayed to next year.
There is Shoshanna's four yard veil, on large veils, particularly, but I picture the instruction can be applied to any size of veil. on youtube you should find Shoshanna's veil work, particularly on the By dancers for dancers trailers. And there is also Katia's Silk Veil for IAMED, which to be honest, I have not heard anything about.. It s been out for a long time, so I personally think it must not be that great if no one praised it so far.Last edited by dinavienna; 06-09-2009 at 07:09 AM.

Re: Favorite Veil DVDs?
Oh there is Farhana's Veil Obedience. I liked it when I bought it long ago, it was one of my first dvds. I think there really is nothing on hers that is not on Sarah's, and Sarah's has much more. There are also some by Amira Mor, she does slow dancing on her "Bellydance your way to your soul" and "bellydance your way to your soulmate". She does quite a few veil moves on them, but I do not like her style to be honest. there is also a fast techno choreography with a veil by her "Bellydance your way to ecstasy". Have not seen it.
Oh and for Isis wings, there is one by Amira Mor I think and one by Ayshe.

Re: Favorite Veil DVDs?
I was going to post this exact question yesterday! I have Sarah Skinner's DVD, but though I love Luscious and the new DVD, I just can't get into her veil DVD. I love Aziza's Bellydance companion, but I'm not sure if I should buy her veil DVD. I know Michelle Joyce has one in her catalog, but she has 2 new veil DVD's coming out soon so I can't decide.

Re: Favorite Veil DVDs?
One more thing:
I so hope Blanca does a veil dvd, maybe choreography or her style in combinations!
She does some veil work in her nymph choreography on "Bellydance Fantasy Desire". I got the dvd for her part only! She works with two tiny veils that are tucked in the costume she takes them out and dances with them in her hands, flicks them around etc.
I love Blanca's style!

I haven't seen all of them but I am still sold on Sarah Skinner's veil DVD. I think it's only about $17 but it's chock full of stuff for beginners. I really learned a lot from this video.

I really like Aziza's veil dvd, I probably wouldn't have thought of any of the veil moves without it.

Re: Favorite Veil DVDs?
Aziza's is probably my favorite. It covers some good basics and goes onto more challenging moves and variations. It's one the few IAMED DVDs that I think was really worth the investment. No plans to sell this one anytime soon.
I also have Shoshanna's 4-yard veil DVD. It's not bad, I've definitely incorporated some of the moves from that DVD into my repertoire. Pretty much everything she does can be done with a traditional veil. I may actually be considering selling my copy soon, I think I've about gotten everything I need from it.
In addition, I have Alyne's Double Veil DVD volume 1. I probably needed to get volume 2. Volume 1 goes over a lot of basic moves that can be done with a single veil that I knew already. But there is a lot of good material here and some stuff I need to practice, so I will be holding onto this one for a bit longer. I need to practice getting in and out of my double veils a bit more. So these DVDs are pricier but I think a good investment.
I know Delilah covers some veil work on her Volume 2, most of I knew, but I did incorporate some of it into my repertoire as well.
Michelle Joyce and Nana Candelaria are both coming out with veil DVDs, so there are a lot of options out there.

Re: Favorite Veil DVDs?
So what kind of stuff is in Aziza's DVD? I love her dancing, but think the IAMED videos are generally overpriced.

Here's the preview:
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beci64nDRPI]YouTube - Belly Dance - Veil with Aziza[/ame]
She goes over basic traveling steps, classic spins and turns and poses out of the classic cabaret repertoire. I totally agree that I generally find IAMED videos overpriced, but this is one that I think was worth the money.

Re: Favorite Veil DVDs?
Katia had a DVD on IAMED that was for extra long silk veils....
I was considering getting Shoshanna's DVD myself but was wondering if the content would be the same as Katia's DVD essentially.
I need to buff up my veil work - I usually only do entrance with veil but my town is heavily into veil as a whole song and when I go back to performing, I will probably have to start incorporating such things into my sets.

Shoshanna's is a bit different from what I remember. Her style is different and I remember her going over some of her signiture moves. I think they are both excellent dvd's.
Aziza's dvd covers a lot of what Delilah covers in her workshop 2 dvd, but she goes into more detail. Cory's veil dvd's are also very good, and very different from the others. She shows a different veil wrap on each dvd and goes from there (showing you how to unwind and so forth). I've found Cory's dvds have a lot of stuff you wont see anywhere else.
Amaya has a good veil video too, but I can't remember too much about it except I think it's short.

I love Katia's Smooth as Silk DVD. She does a great job of breaking down the moves and she shows some moves I've not seen before. I'm a beginner but I really liked it and learned a lot from it.

Re: Favorite Veil DVDs?
I found Sarah Skinner's veil DVD very informative, and her choreography at the end thoroughly enjoyable with clear instructions.
I also have Amaya's veil DVD, which I love. It has several veil wraps for entrances and advanced veil tricks, (like the release and catch) which I have not seen on other DVDs. I love Amaya's teaching style, which is warm and natural.

I just did Aziza's DVD.
Anywoo, I really like it. *cough* I have tried Dolphina's DVD many moons ago and it just didn't have enough kick. Plus, usually in a group type of class, people end up not wanting to learn props, and well we always learn the same thing over and over again. I did learn some new veil work in a semi-private class, which was good, because I was able to apply it to the beginning of her DVD.
Now I will be sort of ready for whatever my instructor gives to me in private lessons, if I attend a workshop, or take classes somewhere else just to branch out.
It was really challenging for me, and I am glad that I posted what kind of DVD's I was looking for in the ISO thread. Usually, I go on Amazon and well get something that is too easy. I know I haven't mastered everything yet, so it is nice to have other dancers know what to do with me. lmao!
I can't wait to do a more advanced veil dance at my recital. =) Very stoked.Last edited by bdaddiction; 08-29-2009 at 08:09 PM.
