    Khaleegy Instructional DVD

Someone asked where has folkloric gone. Well below is a trailer for what I believe is the world's first DVD instructional on Khaleegy dance by Amera Eid, who spent 15 years as a professional dancer in the Gulf region. In fact I think she became friends with Dina during this period when she was in the Gulf as an unknown dancer at that time.

I know Faten Salama has a khaleegy dvd but that's a taped workshop. So it's not set out like a regular instructional.

I wonder if that would be an interesting instruction though, sort of an "unplugged" version. Sounds interesting.

A Khaleegy video is in my list of new instructionals to get.

I'm a little confused, I only see a Saidi and an Arab-Andalusian DVD?

    Just found this!

    I think both look amazing!!!

Could also be nice complements - Shahin's appears to be a choreography, and Amera's more cultural info and generic steps.

That is a bizarre coincidence. Amera hosted a workshop for Mohamed when he was passing through Sydney.

Shallowly, I would just like to say that Amera looks A-MA-ZING on this footage and so slim and relaxed! It makes me happy!

This DVD is definitely one I will get down the track.

I saw the advertising video on YouTube that Mohamed posted on Facebook. I think he is also including a shaabi choreography as well on the same video. I took the workshop for the shaabi choreography when he was here in Chicago. It was fun.

    Re: Khaleegy Instructional DVD

Guys, it says in this Mohamed Shahih trailer "this is the 4th instructional".

I see a "Sharqiyat" instructional with Oriental and Saidi if I get that right (two separate youtube trailers, but only one cover..)
    One Andalusian dvd.

And now this one - does anyone know what the 4th one is? Or is there a separate Saidi? thanks!!!

Its a song by the UAE artist Hussein El Jassmy ;) I believe its on his album from 2006. The name escapes me (read: I havent had time to re-import all my CDs to iTunes yet after my computer crashed).

    Re: Khaleegy Instructional DVD

I am often surprised by dancers and teachers from "down under" us, equatorially-speaking. I don't think the US really gets much in the way of Australian or New Zealand dance media. I can probably name ONE dancer -- Keti Sharif. We don't get THAT much in terms of European dancers, but hardly anything from Australia.

Didn't Amera have an online store at some point with a ton of dvds? I saw an Australian site that had what looked like awesome workshop videos from Egyptian dancers -- stuff I'd never seen here -- but by the time I had enough $$ saved, it either went down or the store closed. :( (Actually I'm not sure we can play those DVDs, but I would have found a way!!!)

She still has it - Amera's Palace. I think the stock shifts all the time. It's not that cheap but she does get good stuff. She is good friends with Yasmina of Cairo so has her CDs etc.

Oh, and the reason you don't get much from Australia is probably simply that even though it's ninety million times bigger than NZ and has a lot more people, it still has only a *few* compared with Europe and the US, and it costs a lot of money to make such things in our countries.

    Re: Khaleegy Instructional DVD

I'm really tempted to order Amera's video. From the trailer, it looks really interesting. I've been searching for a khaleegi instructional DVD for some years now, and Mohamed Shahin doesn't quite do it for me. I'm not really sure just how authentic vs. how theatrical his interpretation of gulf dances might be.
But the price of Amera's DVD is pretty steep. It says $59.95 on her website which I assume are Australian dollars...which is still expensive in U.S currency, about $50 dollars or so plus shipping. And it's only a little over an hour long. I'd still buy it if it's good though. Has anyone had a chance to see it yet? And most importantly, will it play in my DVD player?

Yes Dina...thats it!!!! On Amazon Alshaki 5:41 on the Marmar album!!!! UAE seems to be my favorite for this type of music. The drums seem to be more pronounced and the feel is very rolling and relaxed.

Oh I LOOOVE Gulf music. The driving drum.. you might like quite a bit of Iraqi music too, then! They have some elements of the gulf dance and music in my opinion, especially the hair throwing in the dance, at least what I have seen and believe is Iraqi.

I have no idea what this music or dance tradition is, Iraq and Gulf are a big mystery to me, but I love this type of videos:

I am not sure if these dancers are kind of "bad girls" in shady establishments.. a lot of the commenters get pretty rude about them. Still I love this kind of dancing and music!

I'm also very tempted by Amera's... VERY. Still like Mohammed Shahin's too - cute style of the choreo IMO (but of course I know nothing about authentic Khaleej style).

No, I had not heard of Amera previously! I'd come across her shop though. Does she have any other products out there?
