Thread: Yasmina's new CD - Aheb Masr

Has anyone gotten Yasmina's new CD? I listened to the clips on Dahlal, and honestly I was really disappointed - everything sounded very synthesized, not at all like her prior CDs. I'm guessing this is because Safaa Farid is working with (and married to) Leila now...? Still, I'm bummed.

Anyone have other thoughts/opinions?

I have read lots of positive reviews on it here and on other sites like Gilded Serpent - we worked with one of the songs recently at a workshop and it was great. This is definitely on my next CD order.

Are you talking about El Warda? Because Aheb Masr isnt the latest CD from Yasmina...

Everyone has there on taste but I loved Aheb Mars! The oriental routine "Aheb Masr" and the baladi "Classical baladi" are amazing. We used them in our dvd (you can look for Bellydance Production - Taksim demo on Youtube)
There are other really good piece on that CD, one that was used by Randa Kamel at her workshop during Ahlan Wa Sahlan 2 years ago I think? Cant remember the name of the song...

I'm still looking for time to carefully listen to El Warda (the newest one)... Yasmina is a doll, she's very sweet and helpful. I love her!

I loved "Aheb Masr" so I was very excited to get the new one "El Warda". I wasn't that impressed with it on the first listen (probably time to go back to listen again) and I know that Yasmina works very hard on producing these. She told me that she thought it was the best one yet . . . darn, if it had topped "Aheb Masr" IMO, it should have been fabulous!

Lucy, you might not remember but I danced to a song from "Aheb Masr" (Agibni Kulak??) at the Fifi workshop in 2008 . . . you danced right after me though so maybe you weren't paying attention ;) .

In my opinion Aheb Masr was fabulous but her latest Warda no not as good. i was disappointed. Nothing said dance to me on it

On El Warda, I do like " El Bustagaya".
The saidi song is growing on me but it's a bit too long and needed editing. The rest of it is good for listening but nothing jumps out at me that I simply must dance to. I was disappointed. Also got Leila of Cairo's latest and it isn't grabbing me either - although I love the song about the pussy cat.

In general, both CDs have such long tracks (and not just the majencis), that they would be hard to put into an American restaurant set or hafli because audiences prefer songs that are under 4 minutes or have a LOT of variety within them.

how many has yasmina released?

is there a place where one can hear the pussycat drum solo, or a snippet of it?? i'm too curious... (HMC does not have that song for listening).

The pussy cat song isn't a drum solo. It's a baladi-sounding tune where the guy is singing 'pussy cat pussy cat pussy cat' and then in Arabic about how much he loves his pussy cat and how she takes such good care of him.

I think yasmina has released 4 CDs so far . . . at least that is how many I have.

FYI, she is working a new one which will be all baladi! Lots of accordion . . . I heard snips of it while in Cairo and I am anxiously awaiting the final release.

CD Baby has the Om Al Dunya CD and a clip of the Pussy Cat song.

I love Aheb Masri. I think its a fantastic CD and I highly recommend you buy it. There are several songs on the CD that are wonderful! I have done choreographies to many of the songs. I also have El Warda, although I do not think its as good. If you haven't bought it yet, I recommend that you do.

Safaa Farid does sing many of the songs on Aheb Masri. Yes, he used to be married to Yasmina, but he is now married to Leila. Yasmina has maintained a professional relationship with him despite what he did to her and his band appears on her Farha Tour as well.

Just writing to say I loved Aheb Mesr too. Infact I liked it more that she had a variety of different musicians on there rather than sticking to the same band/singer for the whole thing.
