I'm definitely not trying to hijack the thread here but I have a question...
Are any intermediate/advanced dvd's in more "traditional" style belly dance forthcoming? I absolutely love your DVD's and I'm hoping for more in that style.

OK I just turned on pre-orders for Solar and Lunar (click the link I just added at the top of this thread)... So we are inching our way toward the complete picture: Got the trailers...got the covers...next: The written descriptions of the DVDs. We're still working on writing those, but they should be up in a day or two...unless the weather is really nice here in New York City... ,r:; ..g.:

Looks very based in western dance technique. Might be good for those with arm and posture issues, even if this isn't your regular dance style.

Solar Bellydance, created by New York-based star of tribal bellydance Sera Solstice develops and extends the East Coast Tribal bellydance style with an intense and challenging repertoire of movement infused with the solar energy of grace, confidence, and self-acceptance. Sera's program is designed to enrich your bellydance practice by adding extension and full-body movement to balance the traditional focus on isolations in bellydance instruction and technique drills. Solar movement promotes a high level of dance technique, balance control, precision in transitions, and stamina.

Sera's inspiration for the four Solar combinations featured in Solar Bellydance came from observing the release of joy through free-style movement on club dancefloors as DJs wield the energy of the room through dynamic sequences of club beats. Solar is expansive, energetic, projective. It includes a lot of travel steps, and reaches outward. It contains warrior energy, it's about action and the dancer's connection to the world and the people around her. Solar is the dance of abundance, energy, power, passion, sexuality, physicality, confrontation, resolve, and transformation.

The program opens with the East Coast Tribal Essential Movement Practice including warmup, technique review, and meditation. The flow of movement continues with Essential Solar Armwork and the signature East Coast Tribal Essential Hipwork, and then culminates with footwork, hipwork and undulations movement drills that prepare you for the 4 combinations taught later in the program. An extended movement flow is the key element of the Solstice method of daily muscle conditioning and deep technique work. You will enjoy non-stop movement to evocative cutting-edge world music electronica.

The four elemental movement combinations - Air, Fire, Water, and Earth - are demonstrated by Sera and the Solstice Ensemble - first at a slow tempo, and then up to speed. In addition, Sera offers a detailed breakdown of each step. Wow, lotsa energy in this dvd and looks very challenging. I NEED some of that energy!!

Just a quick take:

Good menuing, very nice production quality.

The first part is "essential technique," which is actually a whole lot of lead-and-follow without technique breakdown. Definitely for the intermediate or advanced student.

Then there are four combos, one for each element, earth, air, water, fire. These have a demo/practice that starts out very slow, then gradually speeds up. I very much liked that aspect of doing it slowly, then picking up the pace. These practices are quite lengthy, which is great for drilling the combo.

There's also a "practice flow" section that links the combos together in a loop for practice, which is nice.

These combos are also broken down element by element, but technique still isn't really offered--it's assumed that you already can do these moves.

There's a performance section too, but I didn't have a chance to look at that yesterday.

But I think it's a worthwhile DVD. I'm not a tribal dancer, but I like to study other styles to increase my movement vocabulary. There are plenty of moves that can be adapted for use in cabaret style as well.

Worth the price of admission. :)
