I'm pleased to announce that the first instructional DVD from my new Ginger City Productions, "Bellydance Taqasim: Improvisation Skills & Drills" will be ready soon, and is available for pre-order at my freshly fancied up Ranya.net website shop!

The dvd offers approaches to working with Arabic musicality via the taqasim, or solo improvisation, on the main traditional instruments, oud, qanun, nay, violin, and accordion. With live musician demos and explanations, as well as studio practice, this program should remind dancers of some of the work I did in the Baladi dvd, with extensive detail on nuances of the music, as well as dance technique and performance skills (including Breathwork for Performance) so that you can really dig deep into the subject matter!

The dvd is about 3 hours of video content plus an additional 2 hours of accompanying voiceover commentary that goes with the drills, to help guide you in both your dancing and listening practice. When i was getting into my Arabic music studies, I worked extensively with taqasim--I believe it holds the key to understanding Arabic music as a whole, and even to building a dance method that is true to the music and to one's own humanity.

I'm proud to present this DVD to the dance community and to offer my contribution to dancers in developing their art and knowledge base. I'm grateful for your support of my work.

I must believe the same thing about taqasim as I can really feel how much I get into the music when I find one that I really like.

I've only been dancing a little over a year but I have both of Ranya's DVDs and I love them! I can't wait for this one to come out and will order it as soon as my pathetic student finances are a little better :)

I'm pleased to report that the dvd is in the manufacturing process now, finally. The dvds will be shipped around January 20. I'll also have them with me in Athens, London, and Stockholm, where i'll be teaching this month.

Pre-order now for the current rate-- I may need to raise the price of the dvds as i arranged for extra bonus content pages on the outer dvd packaging: a three-page glossary and disc menu key that you can refer to as you practice. I'm honoring the current rates at least through the end of January. You can go to the Shop page at Ranya.net to order.

I'm pretty sure I'm getting a DVD since I ordered the three at the start when Baladi first came out. Will you be sending a confirmation email to those people who are already getting one? It would put my mind at ease because I'm very excited to receive mine as soon as they start shipping.

If you pre-ordered my "three-pack" a while ago, please send email to office@ranya.net to let my assistant Raqsie know that you want to switch your order from the Classical to the Taqasim one, if you didn't do that already. We've been sending out alerts to people to change their orders if they are interested in the new DVD, but i think maybe not everyone has gotten the e-mail newsletters.

(I will still be making the Classical, but no set release date as of yet, so i'd say go for this one if you are itching for new material!! :-)

When will these ship? I got an e-mail suggesting that I preorder because they would ship January 20th... but it's the 25th and I haven't heard anything...

writing from Stockholm, where i'm having a great time teaching. :-) There was a little delay related to the manufacturing process, so we'll update everyone soon as to the actual ship date--but you'll have to hang tight for a while longer! Thanks for your patience, all!
