Thread: Dance Today Samba

I've never taken a Samba class before, but I'm learning a Samba number right now and would love to learn more. I saw a preview of this DVD on Youtube and I was really excited about it. Do any of you have it? Do you recommend it? Are there other Samba vids you recommend? I want to learn Samba Samba, not ballroom style Samba.

Hi! I have both DVDs by this instructor. her name is Quenia Ribeiro. She is cute as hell. I think both videos are good, but I MUCH prefer the Samba Reggae workout over her 'active lifestyle' one. The reason for this is that samba reggae has clearer instruction and a good warmup at the beginning.

When I looked at the reviews from amazon, it really seemed as though she read every single review and incorporated all the feedback into the next project. So anything you see as a complaint about 'active' in reviews simply does not exist on the 'samba reggae'

that being said, the SR I think it's all just about which style of smaba you want to learn. If you're thinking of feather headdresses you may prefer her first video. Like I said, they are both very good.

I have this DVD and I absolutely *love* it. One of the things that I like about it is that Quenia describes the different types of samba and then makes it very clear that what she does and is teaching in the video is the Rio-Carnaval style. I love her 3 performance clips where you get to see her dance in 3 different costumes and with different music. If I ever make it up to NYC, I'll be sure to take one of her classes.

I do dance samba-the tradition way (My mom is BRazilian!)

I know LOTS of professional Samba dancers!!

What city do you live in? Maybe I can find out if there are any good teachers around for you!!

I have the Active Lifestyle one and really like it--I've always liked the music and figured it would be good training for picking up my feet quicker :-) I think it's a dancer's video in that if you aren't already some sort of dancer it would be very difficult to just jump right in, but as a belly dancer I was able to follow along pretty easily (gracefully is another matter, but hopefully that will come with time).

also there's a samba teacher to BOCA Zehzeh. She teaches every year.

I'm Brazilian and i did bought Quenia Ribeiro DVD to see if I could learn a few new tricks... does not happen but at least she explain the type of samba that is from Brazil... i never heard about ballroom samba before and the first time I saw somebody performing I was so mad... Samba is from Brazil and should be dance the was it was created., and yes, we do have a samba style that is dance by couples.
