Thread: The best George Abdo cd to buy?

I am purchasing a whole bunch of cds to "beef up" my collection and I was wondering:

What is the best George Abdo cd to buy?

I am looking to use this for dancing and teaching...

I have some of his stuff - which I love so much - but not on one cd. Thought I would ask which is the best:

Belly Dancing with George Abdo
The Joy of Belly Dancing
The Art of Belly Dancing
Belly Dance!
The Magic of Belly Dancing

I think I see a theme here ;-)

The only sane choice is to get 'em all, but if you're trying to economize, "Belly Dance! The Best of George Abdo".

The Magic of Belly Dancing is not a George Abdo CD. It's one of John B's.

Magic of BD is by George Abdo. Magic of John Bilezikjian is the one by John Bilezikjian. And, both are great!!!

I'm afraid it's true; the best choice is . . . don't choose. There's virtually nothing on all the George Abdo albums on CD that is not worth having; it's all good.

a good way to learn your traditional tunes!

Too bad the Live at the Averof LP is no longer being printed. Can anyone tell me if all the songs on it are available on his other albums? I can't even find mention of it online any more. One MP3 site used to have the downloads for sale, but I can't find it any more. If not, I might be forced to buy it second hand. What about "An Evening with the Flames"?

Your best bet may be Radio Bastet, but even that is a faint lead, I believe Marissa has moved on due to other things in life requiring her attention.

They both have albums by that name.

Which one has the detailed liner notes? Kat, I think you told me about that one. It's a reprint, but with a booklet with detailed notes.

Last night I found the "Live at the Averof" LP on vinyl for sale and ordered it! I'm so excited. Most of the tracks listed on it are ones that I've never even heard. I feel guilty because it's a bit more than I wanted to pay and I was hoping that I might eventually find a copy in the second hand stores, but that's a stretch.

My "Live at the Averof" LP arrived about three days ago. Too bad my son has been home sick Friday so I can't listen to it.

I agree. The best thing about this CD is it comes with a booklet that gives you a little bit of history about George Abdo and his band and a blurb about each song.

Those liner notes are by Anne Rasmussen, an ethnomusicologist from William and Mary, and they're fascinating. She explains the development of Arab-American music in the U.S.
