Re: Khalleeji Hair Help
I have a colleague in town here who has shoulder length hair but wears a 3/4 wig when she does khaleegy. She just cross-pins the living crap out of it and awaaaaaaaaay she swings! She's performed khaleegy publicly quite a few times in the last several years and she's yet to actually throw her hair into the audience, so it must be working. ;-)
Too bad you don't live in Mpls--she's actually teaching a workshop this weekend. I suspect "faking khaleegy hair" will be one of the things she will have to talk about because when she performed it at the last hafla several people had the delayed "Wait...does she normally have that much hair?" reaction. ..g.:Last edited by aamel_MirahAmmal; 03-26-2008 at 05:34 PM. Re: Khalleeji Hair Help
You can buy hair extensions that can be securely clipped in, if you just want it to be temporary, maybe even a wig. ( Search ebay, for hair extensions &/or wigs Otherwise the weave as Michelle suggested.
Great video!

Just beautiful. Long hair is so feminine; I just love it! I used to have hair down to my tailbone, but got tired of it. All my friends had spikey, trendy little bobs and were always like, "you should cut it." Now it's like bra length, which is easier to care for.

Re: Khalleeji Hair Help
When my hair was shorter I used a 3/4 wig when performing khaleegi. Lots of pins. Never had a problem. Now my hair is long enough that I don't need the help.

Re: Khalleeji Hair Help
I just ran across a Craig's List ad for "guinea pigs" for a stylist student learning how to do extensions. Prolly wouldn't get anything like that completely for free but maybe worth checking out your local cosmetology school.

Re: Khalleeji Hair Help
The Mashkelni video is so funny. They hired a bunch of Lebanese girls to do Khaleeji in the video and they didn't do such a good job. I use to have really long hair past my shoulders and since it was thick, Khaleeji and Iraqi was waaay easy. Now it's shorter but I guess I could put some extenstions too. They sell the hair extensions with clips at Sally's Beauty Supply. If you have a sizeable Korean American community, they also sell hair extensions too :)

Re: Khalleeji Hair Help
I was thinking the same thing when I posted the video. BLahh.
Now about the hair clip extensions. I used one and it loosened and nearly fell out during a performance. Not even a Khaleeji performance. Luckily it just fell a bit but that is the worst feeling while performing b/c you can't see your dang hair. I won't ever use a clip. I'll bobby pin the crap out extensions or something else.

Re: Khalleeji Hair Help
I would go with a 3/4 wig. They secure very easily and don't damage your hair as some extensions do!

Re: Khalleeji Hair Help
Try braiding the back of your hair, then clip in extensions. The braids give the clips something to hang onto. I used this a lot doing restaurant work. Looked less obvious than a wig.

Re: Khalleeji Hair Help
Khaleeji is the only thing that makes me miss my hair. But! I can still toss the phantom locks!
I would say extensions rather than a wig, if that's what you want.

Re: Khalleeji Hair Help
you can pin a wig securely enough to do the hair toss.
just create a stable base of your own hair underneath. [ponytails or braids]
then pin the wig on with large roller pins all around the perimeter using the X method.
you should be able to spin, turn and hair toss without the wig moving at all.
imo the clip in extensions are the most risky choice b/c they tend to slip. though the braid method suggested by mystic dancer sounds like a good idea.
regular extensions can damage your own hair and be a serious pain in the *ss to maintain and are expensive.
if its just for the occasional show, you would probably be happy with a good quality wig
