Riq. Duuuuuude.
Can you imagine dancing around with your riq (tambourine), bopping it on your hip or shoulder a few times, and then suddenly busting out like this??????

That was great! I've never seen a riq player, actually.

That was excellent! From what I understand, playing the riqq is harder than playing the darbouka. I heard that Karim Nagi's instructional DVD is a very good start.
Now, I don't think I'm ready to appreciate dance with a riqq, just like I am not sure I'd like to see a dancer carry a big frame drum while dancing, or a darbouka. Somehow, it seems that this is too serious an instrument and not easily integrated into dance to be used as a prop.
Here's the first clip of a riqq player that made my jaw drop, Vince Delgado:

YES! I took years of drumming (doumbeck/darbouka) with Mary Ellen Donald and a few months with Susu (would have taken more with the fab Ms. Pampanin, but she stopped her SF group classes)...I thought riq would be much easier for me given my rhythm background, but it is really tough.
One day...(she says as she stares at her beautiful riq hanging on the studio wall.)
Hahbi'Ru have a great duf (biggish frame drum) choreo that they taught in their advanced classes a few years ago (again, they stopped teaching in SF, sigh). It was *great*. I would love to do a piece inspired by that with my class or trio one day.
I also recall seeing Suhaila's company do a choreo with darbouka's, and really loving it. I think it was at the Northern California Renaissance Faire, but may also have been performed at Rakkasah.
Okay, I am going to watch the clip now.
Edited to add: Great clip, thanks Lauren!
