I've always heard that the word means "mango", and that the song is about a woman with large... mangoes. ..g.:

HA!!!! Well, for once, I may live up to that. ;) Good thing I'm dancing for Americans tonight. ;)

Don't quote me, but I heard that one of the lines in the song translates to something like that.

That's funny - I was looking at a pair of mangos (yes, the fruit) on the counter the other day and thinking "wow, those look WAY more like breasts than watermelons anyday." I started to secretly think of my chest as "my mangos".
Well, it's nice to know that I may have a theme song. Lol.

Yup, ladies, that's exactly what the song is about. When Zaza Hassan was here, he translated the lyrics to the song, through his embarrassed interpreter. ;-) He even picked out an apricot student and a mango student in class! ..l;,

I just had a quick listen to the song this morning. He sings, "I used to like apricots. But now I say, "Mangos!Mangos!" Tee hee...

I thought Lucy was asking about Japanese comics. Even after I first read it, I thought it was a song in Arabic about Manga. Then I thought, "Finally, the perfect song for that Panda/Anime belly dancer that was on the ugly belly dance costume thread." Then I re-read it and realized it was about boobs.
Weirdest thread misunderstanding ever.

The version Dandash dances to on YouTube is a bit different, with the addition of the "dance like xxxxx" verses included -- the song in that version seems more personalized to Dandash. I have the Ali Kurdi version and the version on Dandash's CD. Definitely the same song, just altered on the Dandash version so she can do those fabulous impersonations. (yes, I'll admit it, it's one of my favorite YouTube vids)
There is a part where she puts her hands under her breasts and sort of makes a lifting motion. Silly Me
I always thought she was just adjusting her costume as so many of the ME dancers do so unselfconsciously!

Dandesh performs to Manga on the opening ceremony of Ahlan Wa Sahlan 2002. She also performed to that song when she was in LA in April 2005. I love the music and her imitations of the dancers!
05-17-2007 03:33 PM #23Manga brings people together
I heard somewhere that song was written for her.
That is one song that, in my experience, has always gotten an Arab audience pumped up. Every occaision has been a mixed crowd of Egyptians, Lebanese, Palestinians, Iraqis, Saudis and they ALL love it. Men and women, young and old, Manga brings them together.
The last two times I used it, people were still singing it after the show. One waiter wouldn't quit; I wanted so badly to put some tape over his mouth.
I think Manga is the quintessence of popular Egyptian music: upbeat, about fruit, with mad keyboard riffs. Everyone who likes Egyptian music can appreciate it.

Kamilia, that's good to know - I'm planning on using it at Alf Leyla this weekend. :)

Alf Leyla was the main inspiration for the post.
It's the tall cute waiter who won't shut up after your show, I'll bet my life on it. He'll also mess up the words when he's singing it, so blatantly even if you don't speak much Arabic (moi), and say adamantly that those are the real words. Pleeeeaaase tell me if he does this to you, it would be so funny.

Oh, fun -- an Arabic man with logorrhea (isn't that redundant?).
