Thread: Live recording?

Just a question:

Is it considered bad form to dance to a live recording? (One where there is a tiny bit of clapping that is audible...not defeaning claps or zagareets...)

I'm not entirely comfortable with the idea, but its the shorter version of a drum solo...the studio version is a minute longer, and doesn't have a smooth place to edit...

I'll probably end up just using the extra minute, but I wanted everyone's opinion on this...

If I were you - I'd use it.

If you are looking for a high profile precedent to justify it...I think Jillina used a 'live' recording on the On Fire! DVD, didn't she?

And Shareen Al Safy uses the original Oum Kolthoum live recording of Alf Leyla Wa Leyla in her choreography video of that song, I would assume she also performs to that version though having never witnessed it I can't be sure.

I think dancing to a live recording can be charming and definitely Not bad form.

Yeah, I can't seem to get the extra minute of this piece down...its such a different style from the rest of the song...

Maybe I will use it. Its not like the clapping and so on is really insanely loud anyway... ;)


I thought dancing to Oum Kalthoum's singing was kind of a taboo...any one else heard this?

I LOVE live recording with built-in applause! Raises the energy level somehow.

Yes, I have heard this, I have also heard that you shouldn't even dance to Someone Else singing her lyrics Or dance to the section of the song that Would Have Lyrics in it even though it may be a purely instrumental version.

It's all a load of BS. I think perhaps it was meant as a 'guide' to avoid otherwise ignorant dancers potentially destroying a song performed by someone so famous and beloved of the arabic people. The voice in arabic music is considered a great instrument, Oum Koltoum's one of the greatest of them all, so you can see there would be need to step up and know what your doing, but by no means taboo.

I think it was Yasmina of Cairo that said when faced with this question... (paraphrasing here) "the voice is a beautiful instrument, why wouldn't you dance to it?"

That said, I have never actually performed to OK's voice from a live recording (at least I don't think so, racking my brain but can't remember). Simply because I haven't found a cut of suitable quality, but I have performed to others singing her lyrics.
