What to wear for a Nubian dance?

Can anyone tell me the appropriate costuming for a Nubian dance? Pictures would be great... or resources (videos, etc...)

    Thanks!

A long-sleeved muumuu with a long headscarf, basically.

The traditional outfit is a dress with pleats and a ruffle at the bottom; usually brightly colored. The headscarf should be attached on top of your head and drape down long enough to hold the ends in your hands while you dance.

I think the dress is less authentic here but it's a good example of the use of the headscarf.

    Here is a few exemples:

    1. It is from M. Reda and F.Fahmy seminar in Nov. 2006:

    2. Tito and Noor:

    3. but not last: our own Tywalline troupe in Dallas last August in one of our fave nubian number.

The pictures are small cause I am having a very hard time uploading them on Bhuz.

But if you want them in the original more clear format, PM me your personal email and I'll send exemple directly to you.

    Hug.

Depends on style of Nubian. In most cases you want a very full dress for women with ruffles on the bottom. I believe this is the stage version of what I saw in the Aswan Museum where the dress was formed by three or four strips of fabric running around the body - each one longer than the one above and gathered into it. Head is covered. No belt eg:

The Fadija style which is based on Nubians living further south has a wrapped length of fabric with part of the length going over the head eg:

That is so cute dujah! Thanks! I've gotten some good ideas from these photos. They are all much appreciated! I watched the Tito & Aida Nour video, too, and that was helpful. Now...making something suitable is going to be interesting!!

Re: What to wear for a Nubian dance?

I did the dresses for a local class last year - and the ladies purchased patterns for "granny" style nighties!! LOL Then we added long ruffles to the bottom (the front was slightly higher - above the ankles - than the back) and a small ruffle to the sleeve. Extra wide ric-rac trim around the neck and bottom.

BRIGHT colors!!!! Try lining the ruffles with a co-ordinating bright fabric.

They all made braids and pinned veils to their heads.
