Fatinah, you are relatively new to belly dance aren't you? you will change your mind many times. why not try both styles. I have done workshops on ATS but don't dance it myself. I love watching a good tribal performance as much as I love watching good Raqs Sharqi.
its a long road ahead so enjoy all the genres.

Re: i keep changing my mind now i love tribal!!!!
Sheisdoing both ......with me!
In a perfect world she would not have encountered ATS from me. I like students to have a grounding of basic Egyptian before I teach tribal ways. But as with most teachers my classes are mixed ability, newbies end up doing both. I spend an hour of the lesson doing Egyptian technique and maybe working on a simple choreo to srart to put moves togther and then half an hour tribal at the end ( well that's the theory) and those not into tribal can go if they wish...but they don't so they get to sample tribal earlier then I wuld wish in that perfect world. And because I do ATS imrpov. it's a good gelling activity for the class.

Re: i keep changing my mind now i love tribal!!!!
gosh how things on bhuz get sooooo serious hehehe. I posted this a few weeks ago when I was completely brand new and when I was like "thats it im going to become an egyptian belly dancer" then I saw a tribal piece and loved that...everything was new and exciting and I had such a rush over everything. I was too eager and keen and thought I had to concentrate on doing one or the other. Now 6 weeks on Im very happy with my lessons and I love learning BOTH. The set up of our class is great our teacher teaches us our hip drops, figure 8s, our isolations, putting moves together, shimmies, layering (for those who are more advanced) and then one week we have some veil praccy and then the other we had zills. Then as Liz said we have some tribal practise at the end and everyones happy.
I didnt want anyone thinking for one minute I wasnt happy for not getting the tuition I wanted....
Ahhh Liz you could have warned me these boards would make everything seem so complicated hehehe :P

Re: i keep changing my mind now i love tribal!!!!
I am really encouraged by some of the posts and threads today. Very supportive of each other's different opiniions, tastes, and sense of dancing styles. I'm not that fond of goth tribal to try to do it. However, I like to watch it.
Go with what makes your heart sing!!!! Tribal fusion makes my heart sing. I get a stronger sense of community and unity with other dancers and those taking lessons with me.

Re: i keep changing my mind now i love tribal!!!!
I have to chime in here... :)
I'm a tribal girl, and although I study the isolations pretty heavily, I don't think they're neccessary. ATS does not rely on them and any dancer worth her weight in hip scarves will have a good foundation in Middle Eastern dance technique.
For someone who loves the egyptian style movement, but the look of something a bit more tribal, I HIGHLY recommend John Compton and Habhi 'Ru. John sticks with a more folkloric interpretation of the movements. He'll tell you, he's not tribal nor is he cabaret. He's a folkloric dancer.
His workshops are amazing and I would recommend buying the vids as well.

Re: i keep changing my mind now i love tribal!!!!
Hi from Nisima, and you don't have to chose; I started out back in the day when "Tribal" was called "Ethnic Style" in California, then worked in clubs totally nightclub style - sequins, beads, high heeled sandals, then went back to a troupe that had gravitated to tribal, which I love for the sheer earthiness of and the costumes have a different "bling". Truthfully, I love both and do both and have since picked up Zambramora style and Egyptian Cane technique and am now into Melaya Leff. I am not recommending that a beginning student try all these styles, I am just saying that if you find you are drawn to more than one style and can devote time to developing it, go for it? ..g.:,r:;..g.:

Re: i keep changing my mind now i love tribal!!!!
Like someone else said, there's nothing saying you can't take more than one style of bellydance :D
i'm in tribal right now but once I have more spare money, i'm intending on jumping into the cabaret classes at the studio :D
you can never know too much! :)
there are lots of tribal dancers who don't do massive amounts of locking and isolation. i've seen cabaret dancers also who can do just as much if not more than some tribal dancers when they do drum solos :D it's just a different way of using your body :)

Re: i keep changing my mind now i love tribal!!!!
I do both Egyptian and Tribal (on the lines of Gypsy Caravan rather than ATS). I started Egyptian first and I still prefer that but I do enjoy Tribal. Also I have found they can compliment each other at times e.g. having to perfect my 'Taqsims' helped me refine and feel more confident with my inverted mayas in Egyptian.
As for videos I supose it depends on what Tribal you do: ATS (FCBD), Gypsy caravan or fusion ?
There are loads of Tribal videos (more so than amazon) avaliable at Belly dance costume & belly dance supplies at Aladdin's Cave
Gypsy caravan and FCBD are good.

Re: i keep changing my mind now i love tribal!!!!
So did I but my tutor refered to it as being slightly different and then in my resarch and a enquiry I made to someone on this subject lead me to this article:
Tribal Bellydance Articles [ATS vs. Tribal]
So I now tend to think of them as slightly different.

Re: i keep changing my mind now i love tribal!!!!
Wow thanks for that. I had read somewhere that carolena was saying that only the style dne by FCBD should be called ATS. Now frankly I think it's a shame if those who do improvisational tribal style as so Gypsy Caravan and as did Domba start calling themselves just Tribal. then we really are confused because there is a total mismash of dances out there poporting to be "tribal" belly dance. Now I have read the abbrevaition ITS (Improvisational Tribal Style) but I still think those dancing a la GC and Black Sheep and Domba are "old style" enough to still be in the ATS stable.
The troupe I belong call ourselves tribal fusion because we usually choreograph in performance but we have always dance the stpes of those four practitioners and we don't blend in anything other than our Egyptian background.
Sharon where are you...can you give us your thoughts?
