Thread: Is there a tribal scene in the uk...artists troupes etc...Im a novice so dont laugh!

Hi Girls,

As you know Im new to bellydance and was wondering if there was any good troupes or performers of the tribal style in the UK? I found a girl who dances with rachel brice and co in america whos english but I havent been able to find any UK tribal dancers/troupes etc that I can look at.

I have nearly gone bankrupt buying tribal dvds haha.

There is indeed a very thriving Tribal scene here, and if you frequent Tribe, you'd probably find out more there.

Just off the top of my head, very quickly...

For old school ATS - Khalgani who have worked a lot with Paulette Rees-Dennis of Gypsy Caravan. Based in the West Midlands/Birmingham.

For an interesting take on old school ATS, fused with British & Irish folklore, Four Hundred Roses. Based in Yorkshire/Bradford. If your teacher hasn't already recommended the Jewel of Yorkshire Festival (About the Jewel of Yorkshire.), let me make that recommendation.

For tribal fusion- Dawn O'Brien (of Khalgani), Heike Humphreys (Southampton).

The girl who's English who's working with the BDSS would presumably be Sam Hasthorpe.

Get thee to a festival/series of workshops. In the nicest possible way, there are usually hoards of tribal dancers hanging about and most will be more than happy to network with you.

There is quite a big scene and its growing with groups like:
Tribe of Kismet in Essex *Deana and Sarah are also FCBD trained
Eceni in Northfolk
Pheonix Bellydance in Essex
Barefoot Bellydance in Buckinghamshire trained under Gypsy Caravan
Morai in London
and Tribal Fusion group Neohips

There are also events like Tribal Vibe - November 14, 15 & 16 2008 (weekend of workshops, performances and special guests)
