    favorite shaabi-style moves

I'm getting ready to start working on putting together a new choreography, doing the shaabi style, and I wanted to be prepared before my teacher and I start hammering away at it. I've been trying to watch vids on youtube to pick it up, but I'm not the best at analyzing combinations, so I thought I'd ask everyone here what their favorite things to do when dancing shaabi are. Ideas???..g.:

    Hi Muneera

I'd go with simpler stuff, not so hot-shot choreographed-to-the-eyelash. Heavier feeling (like baladi). And with a lot of personal Attitude!

One of my favourite moves that I use in Shaabi is what I call a Lucy Kick (because I saw Lucy doing it & liked it). Step onto, say, the Right foot, twist your body to the Left, so your torso is kind of rotating away from the foot you just stepped onto, and kick the Left heel on the floor. Then repeat in reverse. Done with the hands clasped behind the back to make as much of the sass of the upper body. Also, with appropriately sassy eyebrow action. (So much description for one little move.)

Don't ask me to find a YouTube clip- I wouldn't know where to start...

I really liked the choreography on Magdy el-Leisy's 2004 "Egyptian Baladi", which is more shaabi in style. It's not cheap, and the camera work SUCKS (think blair witch project, but with bad sound and filmed from far away), but it was adorable.

THe other person you may want to watch is Fifi! If you can afford some of Little EGypts videos she idd a TON of Shaabi at last years workshops!

Another music video I saw that has a lot of Shaabi and I think its on YouTube is Marwa's "Naeema". They do some cute fun stuff in that video!

Do either of you know who the singer is on this song? Is that the Dh Min song or something like that? I really want the whole album.

When Amera was here the other week, teaching a choreo to a shaabi piece (to be done in galabeya), she taught a rather cool and cute move where you're stepping to the side - if stepping right, the left foot crosses in front, right out to the side, left cross again, right out to the side, until such time as you want to change direction - with a bit of a bend, a nice loose 3/4 shimmy on top, and lifting up the hem of your galabeya.

Yes Magdy called it "Dh Min' but I recently saw a show and the group listed the artist as Hakim and a different name. Little Egypt has the cd of music from Magdy's workshops that year I am sure!
