    ATS, Tribaret, Folkloric, Cab, etc: CALLING ALL CLIPS

    Can anyone show me their favorite clip from these styles? I'm trying to pin down what style I am after but since I'm such a beginner, I don't have a trained eye or know what to look for on You Tube. On one of my other threads for example Oracle mentioned folkloric. Would like to see a really good clip of that.

    I am hoping to compile clips from these different styles but when I look them up sometimes they all run together and I can't visually discern Turkish from Cab or Tribal fusion from just plain tribal. (Can't even find a folkloric clip. I kow I'm so lame ..c::)

    Feel free to comment on them too, I can use all the help I can get. ..g.:

    Re: ATS, Tribaret, Folkloric, Cab, etc: CALLING ALL CLIPS

    Oh, wow. Really smart idea, but huge task. There are so many different styles that fall under the title of "bellydance". I don't have the clips and should be running out the door, but you could start by looking for the following:

    American Tribal Style - look for Fatchance Bellydance

    Modern Cairo style - look for Randa, Dina for starters

    Tribaret - someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this term really started more as a costuming description, not as a dance style. Though it may have grown into a dance style that I'm not as aware of. A great exemplar of tribaret costuming and easy to locate on the web is Ansuya. Perhaps her dancing would fall under this title, too?

    Cabaret - a very, very loose term, basically just distinquishes between a glitzy nightclub style of dance vs. earthy tribal. Many, many vastly different styles of dance would be under the umbrella of "cabaret"... American style bellydance, Egyptian style bellydance, Turkish, etc. Personally I can't stand the word, but if you want to know if something is "cabaret" - if they are wearing beads, sequins, chiffon, lycra, etc., they are considered cabaret. Aziza is a nice example, if one must be chosen.

    American Cabaret (AmCab is the common abbreviation) - Cory Zamora, Anaheed

    Turkish - look for Artemis

    Folkloric - once again, a very loose term. Different regions of the middle east have different folkloric dances. The dances come from the location, so if you study folkloric dances - you need to pick a location and find out about the movements that stem from there. Some words to look for: Saidi, Khaleegi, Debke, Ghawazee, Nubian, Bedouin

    Tribal Fusion - someone help me with some examples - Rachel Brice? Ah, Unmata, how could I forget!

    hope that helps more than confuses, just a super quick list to get you going

    Re: ATS, Tribaret, Folkloric, Cab, etc: CALLING ALL CLIPS

    Just to confuzzle "folkloric" - sometimes folkloric is not necessarily folk dancing, if that makes any sense. Personally, I actually use "folk" to describe "the dance folk do" and "folkloric" to describe "the dance that represents what folk do that is all gussied up for stage and may have political implications."

    People who've worked more with Egyptian teachers can correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that when an Egyptian dancer says "that is folklore" s/he doesn't mean "that is what saidi/felahi/insert appropriate 'folks' here do socially in their own homes." S/he means "that's the stagey balletified stuff we do in the Reda Troupe or the National Folkloric Troupe."

    The trend for countries to produce "national folkloric ballets" during the mid-20th century had much to do with creating idealised fantasies about their own nations and societies. Hence, you have melaya leff as a fantasy presentation of what baladi women do, not an actual representation of a dance that baladi women do in real life, or felahi dance that imitates what felahi people do when going about their business, not necessarily what they do if they happen to be dancing. And it's viewed through a middle class Cairene eye. Same kind of situations are going on in Russian folk and other countries' folk troupes.

    Delicious Egyptian oriental (or "cabaret" if we must) that is far too short. Note the sequins, beads, pink chiffon and feminine weakness - not!

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi_oTxS34JY"]YouTube - Tito's workshop 1.12.2005[/ame]

    Same dancer presenting a folkloric piece, ie Melaya Leff, in a workshop. And obviously, there is one really unusual thing about this performance...!

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CwAGDpDJ1s]YouTube - Nour & Tito Nuby Dance (From Nour & Tito DVD 2005)[/ame]

    Nubian folkloric

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egIgfL8rUk0]YouTube - Nubian Dance and Song[/ame]

    Possibly more "genuine" Nubian.

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Sjgto_FAvQ]YouTube - Tito @ the Las Vegas IBDC 2007[/ame]

    Tito again doing beautiful Egyptian oriental. (Three guesses who my fave dancer of the moment is...)

    They mostly improvise ATS style and I would imagine that clip is improv.
    I have seen them do the same number in London. I love the track too.

    Bhuz's Shems has compiled an extensive youtube bellydance playlist which is categorized by style, among other things, I think it is just what you are looking for... Is OK for me to post her link here? Her youtube ID is shemsdance, I think you can look her up that way.

    Sorry went a bit mad there
    - there are loads on youtube - just keep searching and watching
    but for folklore and understanding Egyptian better a good grasp of the music and different styles; beledi, saidi, maloouf helps also Turkish music has a different time signature/ rhythm 9/8. Aisha Ali has documented a lot of Egyptian and other folkloric dances in her videos.

    Hi, Khalima is probably referring to the styles primer I put together for my student's here:

    More About Shems and About Belly Dance - Shems - Professional Belly Dancer serving Washington DC & Baltimore

    with adjoining youtube playlists. I'm also building some good playlists for different folkloric styles as well and will eventually extend my primer to include those, but you are welcome to sift through:

    That's my understanding as well.

    Getting back to the topic, go and buy videos or DVDs. You need to see lots of examples of each type. Back in 2001 I spent over 100 hours watching folkloric and raqs sharqi videos to extract under an hour of examples for my students. Today I see the glaring gaps and I'm very aware that by distilling it down I have in some ways done my students a disservice if they end up thinking that one hour is it.

    YouTube is too short, and too pre-selected. Sit down and watch three full examples of (say) guerda all the way through - ideally at least one from the source (as in Bobby Farrah's "Rare Glimpses"). Come back a couple of weeks later and do it again. If in the meantime you can get some lessons in the style all the better. Then pick another style. Watch, compere. Check out the credentials of the performers (where/who did they learn from, what other influences could be affecting their interpretation). It takes time. Start now and avoid the rush,r:;

    There are many looks to ATS and tribal, so don't get too caught up on the look. Unless you prefer bedlah, then you might have reason to take pause. :)

    That was part improv (the beginning, you can see the dancer stage left watching the leader on the right--strange position for a lead, but I don't know what formation they may have come out of to get there). But then the Egyptians into calibrated spins is definitely planned/choreographed. Still, lovely ATS. :)

    Here is my troupe performing a collaboration with another tribal troupe. There are sections of staging and choreography, but the rest of it is all tribal group improv. (Check that. In this clip, it is entirely improvised. In Clips 2 and 3 of this performance, we do have some choreography/staging set)
