Name that step
Can you tell me what this traveling step is called at 0:18-0:21? I love it and haven't learned it yet. I know it's qute brief but usually the dancer travels around in a half or full circle on the floor

Re: Name that step
As always it depends on who you ask. ..g.:
Three to get you started, from various instructors: traveling twists, twisty hips, and finale hips.

Re: Name that step
It can be difficult to execute these cleanly, especially if -- like me -- you have wide hips. It's the extra momentum!
I just happened to come across Jillina (vintage Jillina!) doing some nice crisp ones on her toes here at about 1:33:

Thank you Zana! You guys can always be depended on to know all this cool stuff! I like Jillina's style. At first I didn't but she just grew on me. I like her choreography. I never hear her mentioned here. Is she not one of the favorites?

Re: Name that step
We always called it the scooch and Jillina executed it better than the Turkish dancer. Typically it is done on the balls of the feet, legs close together and you can travel the floor twisting the hip. Usually in a circle but you can go pretty much in any direction you want.
The turkish dancer has some very awkward wide open leg movements. For her style of dancing I think she'd look better if she wore a full skirt rather than a tight one.

Re: Name that step
I don't know if that move has an 'official' name -- twisty sidey step?
My students and I always call it the 'squash-a-bug' step cuz that's how I teach it. We pretend to squash a bug in front of us with one foot. Then there's a whole row of bugs....
I always want to do this in Saidi dances when the rhythm changes to a fast 2-beat. (is that fast ayoub or fellahi that turns up in Saidi pieces? Not enough coffee this morning)

Re: Name that step
Yeah in Egyptian class they're just referred to as travelling hip twists. However in my Tribal class we do them slightly more stylized with the arms and call them the Tunisian - although we use the name for a different move in Egyptian.

Re: Name that step
I learned it as a traveling hip twist as well.
And right on about the wider hip caution. That move never really looked right on me, now I know why.

Re: Name that step
We call them the traveling hip twists/forward on the 1, because you can also do them "forward on the and". Then the accent changes.
"forward on the 1" -- on the 1, step on the leading hip's foot and twist that hip forward; on the "and", step on the trailing hip's foot and return hips to neutral.
"forward on the and" -- on the "and", step on the leading hip's foot and twist that hip forward; on the 1, step on the trailing hip's foot and return hips to neutral.

Re: Name that step
In my land, that is a Tunisian twist with a level change. The words "Jamila" and "Salimpour" are springing to mind, especially if the same term is used in tribal...

Re: Name that step
I don't think it has a 'name' but she is travelling (one travel step, one side kick, one travel step, one side kick etc.) while doing a hip drop which kicks out to the side, and also layering a camel in there that has a level change, (down up, down, up.) I think this could be confused with the move where you lean right back and do a lot of side kicking, but the weight would be all wrong for travelling that way.

Re: Name that step
I learned it as a "Fifi". This came from my very first instructor since FiFI Abdo does that move all the time!
Thats what I call it! ;-)

Re: Name that step
Good one!
There's a dance move my mother coined "Wanda's Walk." She calls it that because she discovered it one day while she was practicing and didn't have a name for it. Mom's name is Wanda, ergo "Wanda's Walk."
Some people might describe it as a forward-and-back step:
prep with weight on left foot
step forward with right foot
step on the left foot
step back with the right foot
step again on the left foot
left foot makes in-place steps only; now do it with the left foot in motion!
It's kinda fun to find out where names of things come from!

Re: Name that step
That looked like what I know as a Tunisian hip twist as well. There is a nice video of Zahra Zuhair in Tunisian dress doing those hip twists:

They are lots of fun, but mind you, I get stitches in my sides if I do them too long!

Re: Name that step
I think if we are all talking about the same thing, this is the super detailed version of how I learned this..l;,:
Part 1 the basic step
This step is up on releve, so up on the balls of your feet and stay there!
If you would like to twist on the right hip, place your right foot slightly in front of the left foot.
Step with most of your weight on your right foot hip, while twisting or cocking your right hip forward at an angle, like your are facing front but showing off that right hip. You will use your obliques for this and should feel a twist in your torso. This is the PREP for the next step.
TWIST STEP:Release your right foot , moving your weight back to your left foot. When you release, twist your right hip BACK clockwise, untwisting your torso (again using obliques). Your right foot will come up slightly off the floor and forward as as you twist back on that right hip (point the toe). You are essentially doing three things simultaneously in this move: A weight shift from the right leg to the left, twisting your right hip from a forward/cocked position to a neutral/slightly back position, and bringing your right foot slightly off the ground as you release. To repeat, just prep with putting your right foot forward again and cocking your right hip forward.
I would get comfortable doing this twist in place. I know this may sound strange, but I always imagine I am putting out a cigarette with my right foot (when twisting on the right), twisting over and forward with my right hip and placing my right foot on the offensive thing, and grinding it out as I release my right hip and foot back to neutral. Try the left side as well.
The count is prep-twist-prep-twist or you can think of it counts as AND-1-AND-2-AND-3... with the counts being the twist part of the step.
onto part 2, traveling...
