Tahtil Shibek from then to now...
Here's an unfortunately, small clip of the mother of belly dance Tahia Karioka:

And of course Dina:

Re: Tahtil Shibek from then to now...
They're both great, but I really prefer Tahia's version. Does anyone know what movie this footage is from?
Dina's has more of an Oriental feel to it. Perhaps a better choice for a larger audience, but I really prefer Tahia's laid-back Baladi.
In any case, if I could adopt 1/8 of either of their talent, I'd be one happy girl. Great clips Norma. Thanks!

Also Dina's interpretation is completely choregraphed...Tahia's seems improvisational.

I really love that song. I never get tired of hearing it. Tahia's may seem like improv but I almost guarantee it's not because they probably had to shoot the scene a million times for the movie. lol

Thia's hips are so sweet at :57 to 1:05 they just make you want to cry...no one does that move today. It is so small and so subtle, but it seems to be the soul of the dance...what would you say that movement is and how would you break it down..or can you?

Re: Tahtil Shibek from then to now...
I teach it as a weight shift with a very small and casual half circle to the front (rather a push forward of the hips as the weight is shifting). I love this move.
Oh boy!! So would that be a pelvic roll back with the point of one hip - 2 times on the newly freed hip - as the weight is shifted to the load bearing leg? Oh Boy oh boy!!! That feels about right!!!! Whoopee - I love you! Is that it?

Re: Tahtil Shibek from then to now...
I dealt with the intimidation factor, too. But I love the song so much I just had to perform it. I did make it a point to not watch Dina's version beforehand--still haven't seen hers all the way through--that helped ratchet down the anxiety a bit!
(and keep me from copying her)
08-21-2008 10:42 AM #12Re: Tahtil Shibek from then to now...
If you watch her closely you'll see that she does sometimes do a bit of a pelvic roll and even a slight upwards figure 8 sometimes as she shifts her weight. You can vary what your hips are doing slightly, as long as you have that smooth weight transition down. She also varies the timing of the weight shift to suit the phrasing of the music (or her inclination at the moment). The brilliance of this move is its casualness - it's gorgeous and perfect, and never overly thought out. You HAVE to get this move into your body so that you don't consciously think about what's going on with your pelvis and you can make those subtle variations thoughtlessly and effortlessly.

Thats the way it looks on so many old dancers I have seen on film. It seems to be what gives beledi it's special natural flavor. I cant thak you enough!

In between Taheya and Dina would be this:
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tvGP-hTOhA]YouTube - Fifi Abdo[/ame]
BUT my very favorite Tahtil Shibbak is by a Russian in street clothes.
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Se0vQhNPkfo]YouTube - Aida Hassan is amazing and great bellydancer[/ame]

that Aida Hassan is great but there was alot of Dina in that. But I do think that since I love Dina's interpretation of that song to much, that if I performed it there would be alot of Dina too.

Re: Tahtil Shibek from then to now...
Actually, I think that move is a combination of stomach and hip and uses the ball of the foot and knee to help. The hip is circled from the back to the front in a half circle.
At the same time you are circling your hip to the front, you hold in your belly on the same side. When you circle the opposite side, you hold in your belly on that side, while releasing the belly on the other side. My teacher used to call it divided body wave.

I love how Tahia is all "yeah, whatever" in this clip, chomping on her gum. I'd love to know the story!

I just love this song. And yes, it is intimidating knowing all the great dancers who have used it. The first time I performed it was to the live music of Naser Musa and Soheil Kaspar. Talk about intimidation!
Always trolling YouTube for new videos to see how each dancer interprets the music. Tahia is just the bomb, isn't she?

Re: Tahtil Shibek from then to now...
Am right that when practicing that hip move it is very small and feels almost like the stomach is pulling the hip around? Where as a hip circle feels very clearly that hip is propelling the movement? I like the casualness of the move and I want to make sure that I am practicing it correctly.

Yes, but the American way is to overemphasize this and turn it into a muscular display, and that's what I caution against - overemphasis on the abs will westernize the look and feel of the movement.
It still needs to be subtle and casual, even though the abs are powering the movement. Personally, I think there's an interplay between the weight shift and the abs, and neither should be emphasized over the other.
