Home Depot. But a dowel, cut it to size, stain it. get two and really scare people! There you go.

I agree with Tahira. That's how we did it. Bought dowels, stained and painted them.

2"+ if you dare. Looks much more impressive. Anything less than 1.25" is somewhat lame. If anyone in your audience is very far away a smaller stick can be tough to see. Play with the heft in the store and find your comfort zone. I bought 3 sizes and waited to stain and decorate mine until I was certain which one worked best. If you decide to seal the finish be careful about applying it to the ends of the stick. A slick finish can make it tougher to keep the sticks in-place when dancing in tandem.

Thirding (fourthing?) dowling from a hardware store. Cheap and easy.

For a different but also bigger-than-a-cane look, you can also get PVC pipe cut to the length you want, then cover it with brightly colored electric tape. Go two-tone diagonal, like a barber shop pole!

The wooden dowels are ok, unless you are tapping the stage or doing the mock battle with them. If that is the case, they can be too brittle to take much of that punishment.
Visit a local cane/ rattan furniture shop and see if they have rattan canes for sale. This is the standard piece of equipment in the SCA for full-contact battle re-enactments and can be cut to proper length easily.

    Re: wanted; a big stick??

Just got the info from Lotus. Sorry it took so long. Here's what we used:
yard long sticks, either 3/4 or 7/8 in diameter.

    Hope that helps!
