    Debke clips

Here are a few clips I found while I was trawling YouTube:

    Palestinian debke

    Wedding in Syria

Omar Sulyman (Syrian singer who's popular in Jordan) some interesting debke

A Fifi clip, I haven't seen before, lots of hair tossing

Many of the shopping malls here have entertainment on a Thursday evening, often provided by local cultural groups or a dance group from a local boys' schools performing al razfah, the male form of what we call “khaleeji dance”. Some numbers they use canes but not in the Egyptian way, the guys sing as they dance and sometimes there’s rifle tossing too. There's always live drumming. It’s magic to be wandering through a mall and find that there’s the dancing, live music and enthusiastic crowds. Last time I was at Mall of the Emirates there was a Moroccan rai group performing, they were sensational.
Our weekend here is Fri/Sat, so Thursday night is the end of the working week for most people and everyone’s out and about in the huge shopping malls (especially now as the heat really starts to build, it’s been 40 degrees C at 8am some mornings and summer hasn’t officially arrived yet). As I wander around the malls I feel like could be in any mall anywhere in the world; there are groups of young teenagers (single sex groups though of course) huddled over drinks in the food courts swapping gossip while the older teens and young 20s are promenading in groups eyeing each other (some things are the same the world over) the only difference is that the girls are all wearing abaya and hijab and the boys are in spotless dishdashes.
