Did anyone besides me click on the blogsite of the youtube poster?
q8i stuff: 80s
In this series of pictures there are several that show a sort of sheer thobe over the men's white galabeyas -- can someone talk about these? I don't think I've ever noticed it before.

Re: Khaleegy/Khaleegi/Khalliji
I know a sheer black layer of dress is common among women in the Sa'id and Nubian areas (it's the outer, more dressy layer that would be worn over your regular dress when going out in public), but I haven't seen them on in the Gulf or on men before.
And thank you, thank you for the original link!!

Re: Khaleegy/Khaleegi/Khalliji
Let me ask Mr. Latifa. He spent a lot of time in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf.

Re: Khaleegy/Khaleegi/Khalliji
OK, here's the scoop from Mr. Latifa about those sheer robes. He has had experience hanging out with the Saudi royal family in both summer and winter. He says that the white cotton long shirt/dress that is worn underneath is a thobe. (I thought so but get these basic clothing words mixed up from country to country in the gulf area.) Overtop is the bisht, a loose robe that might be totally open or just tied together in front. The summer bishts are indeed very thin and sheer and are often made of silk for the royals, cotton for the lesser beings.
Winter bishts are thick, like a blanket. Bisht colors vary; winter ones are usually black or brown, and the occasional summer one might be white.

I've heard the word "mishla" used, too, to describe the sheer negligée-like thing; and the winter one called "farwah" (though I think this simply means "fur").

Re: Khaleegy/Khaleegi/Khalliji
Great link, thanks! It's funny though that due to globalization the "rags khaleeji" you generally see done by Khaleejis in nightclubs is a mix of movements throughout the region. There are some general moves that are considered standard like mincing in high heels, tight shoulder shimmies, tons of butt action and wobble head. The dance I've seen done by these Khaleejis is no less authentic but some regional differences are homogenizing.

Wonderful clips,thank you!
Here are some other clips:
(Kuwaiti mostly)

Hauntingly beautiful orchestrated music with young girls performing theatrical scene Gulf dances.
(very well choreographed,IMO)
I like the number with the girls dancing in white/gold costumes(in the second clip)the best!

Re: Khaleegy/Khaleegi/Khalliji
Emma-Bessa, thanks for posting such great clips! The first singer is Rebab.
I love the last clip. I have footage I shot of a whole concert with a similar Kuwaiti group. Great to watch the interaction and listen to the tasfiq (rhythmic clapping). I'm amused by their choice of song: “Ma Ali Wiolto Loo," an old song composed by Farid al-Atrache. I've only heard groups like this sing traditional khaleegy songs.

Thanks for those clips. The one with the men dancing is the 'sawt' music tradition of the Gulf. === Keep those clips coming.

Dear Emma,
If you mean the Saudi Aramco World article on Saudi folk music and dance, please be my guest. Don't forget to click on the photos and sound recordings, both of which were done by Nicole LeCorgne.
Here is the link:

There was an earlier thread that mentioned the ardha, too: http://www.bhuz.com/forum/belly-danc...e-yasmina.html
My hubby got to dance the ardha with the Saudi royal family (and a gazillion others). I've only seen it on video...
