Ditto that question; depending on the answer, just an f.y.i.--yes, I did use the flaming sword kit (Thanks, Luna!!!:)) during a Valentine's performance set at the hookah bar. It was perfectly fine; didn't notice a thing in terms of weight differential and I think it looked great, too!!

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
My rehearsals with the flaming sword kit didn't go well, so I haven't used it in performance yet. Do you put just the "tail" of the little wick under the magnet? My wick didn't light properly or would go out.

By Egyptian sword I mean the ones that don't have the obvious turkish bend look to them. they stay narrow at the end & don't curve as much. I don't know what else to call it... I have some photos of me with it in my gallery...

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
Thanks Jaziri, i was having a techo challenged day!!!
The sword looks a lot like the lion headed sword I bought from Alter Ego on ebay: Gold Lion Head balanced belly dance sword Tribal Kuchi - eBay Other, Swords, Knives, Swords Blades, Collectibles. (end time 21-Sep-08 07:23:32 AEST)
Beautiful sword!!!
Not terribly heavy but I wouldn't classify it as light ... but I've been spoiled by the marvel that is Zen Ptah.
But sort of back to topic, I've never set fire to one of my swords and don't necessarily see that as an improvementLast edited by jilyan; 09-19-2008 at 07:51 AM.

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
I did get the sword kit, and I stuck the little magnet on there, and oddly enough, it didn't change the balance point at all, which is odd. anyway, I bravely set the wick aflame, and it wasn't different from regularly dancing with it at all, except when I went to spin, it was a little disconcerting to see the little flame spinning around my head.... hee hee. No, it's not necessarily an improvement, just something different for the restaurant.

Yes it has to be said that setting fire to anything seems to make it better in the eyes of the GP

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
So, I wonder what I am doing wrong, my flame kept going out. The magnet did not change the balance point, but the fire just wasn't successful. Exactly how do you put the little wick under there? I know there is a photo in the instructions, but I'm a klutz, I guess. Any tips?

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
Well, mine went out until I stuck the little tiny long part under the magnet and left the "puff" sticking out. I soaked the puff, and set on fire...it stays lit even if I spin!!! And stays lit for a long time. Does that make sense?? I can take a photo & email it to you if you want! ..g.:

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
I'm not sure what the "kit" is??
I have this fire sword Fire By Riz - Swords - www.firewhip.com
It looks a lot like the fire sword in the video clip.
I use lamp oil on mine. I soak the wick really well, then let it dry off a bit before lighting it.
I don't use it much as a fire sword. I respect fire, and won't light it unless I have someone around to spot me, just in case. It is a fantastic sword, very well balanced, not too heavy, and I totally recommend the Fire By Ritz swords.

The kit is sold my Amy Luna. They're not showing up on her website, but if you e-mail her she does have them for sale.
You use any sword you have, you attach one of the disposable wicks to the sword with a small magnet she gives you, soak the wick, then light it.

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
Lots and lolts of specific questions here:
(actually let me first describe my situation :)
I use fire (flaming) sword but only outside. The flames are hige and not suitable for most inside venues. One is issue is that besides the lamp oil I also have to use white gas, otherwise it won't light up. The kevlar on the sword is actually heat resistant, so it needs to white gas to catch on fire, and then the lamp oil will carry it on.
I also dance with fire tray indoors all the time; the flames are not as big as with the words but they still look nice. It's an easier set up, because I don't need white gas. I only use cotton balls, so they do catch on fire with the lamp oil.
What I would like to do is a combination of both: set a sword on fire inside, but without the smoke and huge flames. Also it's easy to put out the fire tray with the cotton balls, but for the fire sword I need a whole set up of things (damp towel, an assistant, etc), if I continue dancing right after.
I have a turkish sword (I think it's the Iberia Cas), kind of beat up and lost its shine so I wouldn't mind using that and buy a shiny new one for regular sword. I can make my own "kit" from the needed materials, but:
- some of you mentioned that you use it indoors and it works. Do you have Kevlar on the sword? If yes, what do you use? White gas / lamp oil, something else?
If it's not kevlar, what is it? Do you have a close up pic of it?
Thanks !

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
Marianna, I have Amy Luna's kit, the video in a few posts above (#18) shows it in action. It came with wicks (look like little cotton balls with stems, i'll try to take some pictures later when i have the chance). The kit comes with a small magnet to hold the wick in place. Doesn't throw the balance off. if you sword happens to be made of material that isn't magnetic, she send alond and extra magne to place on the other side of the sword to hold the other magnet on. You then soak the wick with fuel (she sends 99% pure liquid paraffin waz for fuel which you can find in any hardware store). It doesn't smell and burns very clean, hardly any smoke at all and no smell. To extinguish you can simple blow it out, or wait for it to burn out (about 3 mins). You can use more than one wic for a bigger and longer flame.
I don't think the kits are showing up for sale on her site anymore (amyluna.com) but she does have them available, just e-mail her at amyluna@amyluna.com or call 1-888-SHUVANI

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
Thank you so much! Ok that answers my question and makes sense. For indoor use it seems like the cotton ball -strategy would work best. Do you have to change out cotton balls? I would think you would...
If you could post some pics I w0uld soooo appreciate it! With flames and without ? :) pretty please :)
You're right it doesn't show up on her site, that's why I couldn't figure it out.
The place I dance at Saturday nights LOVES the fire tray, but I want to change things up a bit - unfortunately my fire sword won't make it in there...

Lamp oil smokes like crazy. Coleman fuel works better.

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
actually I use lamp oil all the time and it does not smoke. You have to make sure it's 100 % pure oil, and then there is no smoke at all. Of course if you do a longer burn (like 9-10 minutes) there will be some, but it's still not much. But the usual burn is usually no more than 5 minutes, and then it's really nice.
If you use anything less than 100 % then you have smoke. I once bought lamp oil at Home Depot because I ran out of the good one, and it was really bad. I think it was 90 % or something like that - I thought it would work, but nope.

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
I use a fire sword, it's a dragon head scimitar I had my SO add kevlar wick to. It's held by wire that is wrapped tightly around the wick and the sword*. Even with a small puff of wick I would not trust a magnet to keep my fire materials on my sword, no matter how strong the magnets.
One "problem" with my sword is the larger wick means the weight and balance shifts when the wick is fueled up and as the fuel burns off. Lamp oil is tougher to light and can smoke more, but the fact that it is tougher to light means it's harder to set random drips of fuel on fire. White gas is much easier to light but can transfer to skin/clothing and be lit much easier by accident.
I was just a part of a show where I danced with the sword, and I had a hard time prepping for it because if the day was windy there was no way I could practice my balancing. The performance was indoors in a theatre and it was much easier than hoping the weather would cooperate. Both I and the venue had insurance for the show; if you plan on using fire on a regular basis I would sign up for insurance: Specialty Insurance Agency - Entertainer Insurance

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
I emailed the dancer with that website but haven't heard anything (it's been a week or 2).
I guess I will just have to figure it out myself. I'm not so much worried about the balance being off, I would just have to get used to it, but it's the lighting it part: I can't use white gas indoors, but how am I going to light kevlar with lamp oil only?
Still waiting, if anyone has any suggestions...

I use lamp oil only, let it soak for a while, and have never had a problem lighting mine. Maybe there's different kinds of kevlar wicks?
Fire By Ritz sells wicks and parts, and will add a wick to your sword for you. Fire By Riz - Swords - www.firewhip.com

Re: has anybody used the flaming sword kit with egyptian sword?
Does anyone could tell me how long is the kevlar wick from the Amy Luna's kit?
I checked the ones at Fire by Riz and the flame looks too big for dancing in small indoors (crowd restaurants) :S
