Zambra?
So, can anyone point me to any archived posts regarding Zambra Mora and appropriate music for such? Or can we start a new discussion? I'm talking real Zambra, and not Spanish-Arabic fusion.
-ever so grateful!

Just to get you started here are two recommendations that I got from Amaya - Jitano and the Desert Prophets and Ziroq. I use them both extensively - they have a great range of tracks on them. I think Amaya uses the track Ziroq from the CD of the same name on one of her Gypsy Fire DVDs for a Zambra choreography

I would love to start a discussion about this dance style. and exchange information.
I have found one reference to the Zambra in an old video called "Flamenco" (not the Carlos Saura one). Zambra was (and apparently still is occasionally) danced by the gitanos in the caves of the Albacín in Granada, Spain.
I am just starting to research this dance style, although I have been told by some flamenco dancers that there is no such thing as a Zambra!
There is some info on it n a flamenco website, called esflamenco.com.

Aziyade,
Are you on the med-dance list? Just curious because there has been an interesting thread Zambra Mora over there for the last few weeks. (Now I am wondering: was it you who initiated it, perhaps?!)
Anyway, I can forward you some posts if you are not a subscriber (and want to give me you email addy). I think there were about six replies, which I saved.
Cheers,
M.

Just got back from the Elena Lentini workshop in Buffalo. Day two was to be devoted to zambra, but we did a lot rhumba stuff instead, and Elena admitted toward the end of a very delightful day of practicing with fans, that in all her research, she has only found *one* authentic zambra step. Which she demonstrated, and we practiced for awhile. Then we went back to playing with fans.
She did say that Hossam Ramzy's Flamenco Aribe has some zambras on it. So there's another possible music source.

Aziyade, are you up for a road trip the weekend of November 10-11? The reason for asking is that we're planning to have a flamenco artist in Iowa City that weekend, and zambra Mora is one of the things we intend to have that artist teach. At this point we're at a "save the date" stage rather than a "finalized details" stage - we need to complete our contract process with the artist and such before announcing everything. But it's in the works.

Okay, I hope this explanation makes sense.
Start with feet together, then step out to the right side with the right foot Bring the left foot in to “touch” on the ball of the foot. Step out to the left side with the left foot and shift your weight left. Turn your right foot around to the right and pivot so you are facing the opposite direction, swinging your left foot around to begin the step again (the first step-out-to-the-side). You execute the sequence of steps in half-turns, turning right, then left, and so on.
