Thread: Melaya Dancing

Okay... I have seen several Reda style melaya dances....
However, I was at aida nour this weekend and she presented a different melaya feeling dance. It involved the melaya wrapped around the arms with several moves to flip it on and off and use the melaya to swing and change hands. However, there was nothing of the "character" type wrapped up or the unwrapping. Is there more than one melaya dance? Is the aida style particular to a region...

I know I should of asked but by the afternoon I was in a bit of brain overload.
Are there different styles of melaya or is it all the same with different personal interpretation? Or did reda add the prop and now it is apart of the lexicon?

Yes there is more than just Reda. Check out Nadia Hamdi, who was my Melaya goddess and is Baladi personified! Or Fifi, or Dandesh...

Any recommendations where to find the clips... You tubes... video names?

Yes, there are many flavours of milaya. I must admit Aida Nour's is one of my least favourite with lots of flying manipulation and less emphasis on character. I have some 20s clips on on my site comparing workshops I've been to with Raqia, Aida and Denise Enan along with a couple of interpretations by local dancers.
