Go for it and be inspired (to sound really So. Cal..) "Channel the dancer that it was originally written about" I'm teasing now.
But you see what I mean.
This makes me think of that great Dandash routine where she imitates so many other dancers. That's the spirit I try to take to it if I'm dancing to a song written for another dancer, it's like taking on a persona on top of your usual dance persona for a little while.

In the case of the drum solos or funky baladis where the girl chorus swoons over "Ya Mr. Musician" I usually just pretend I'm one of the chorus and swoon along

Perfect example! Especially as Dandesh herself was imitating a song and a concept from an old (1952 or 3?) movie, Dahab, (in which Egyptian child actress Feirouz sings a similar song and imitates Samia and Taheya!).

It is brilliant. And everything new is old, eh?!

nothing to add - just that this was one of the funniest things I've read all day.

i wanna song made for me too! other than that.... i have danced to hossam ramzy's drum solo "taheyya's ankle," which is a tribute to her rather than being for her, but still, i felt free to be myself that time. on the other hand... i'd feel dumb dancing to "samra ya samra," a song i really like, because i would think i looked dumb to arabic speakers - pasty white chick dancing to a song about a dark-skinned girl.

HA! I only checked this thread b/c I love Dani and I didn't remember what Eponymous meant!

For God's sake, PLEASE dance to "Ya Bahaia"!!!!!
I have costumes to pay for!

    But seriously...
Would you leave the dance floor if the dj put on "Brown Eyed Girl" and you had blue eyes or what if it was Sir Mix-a-lot's "I like big butts" and you had a pancake ass???? (Set aside your musical taste)

I dance to Eponymous songs all the time - even with Arabic audiences.
There's always gonna be one bitchy lady or a-hole man in the audience who will love to point your error out to you. I say, "screw them".
Many of them won't remember your name anyway.

Dance to the music that moves you. Accept no substitute!

And keep your ears open for my next release, where the off-key Arabic girls chorus will repeat this phrase over and over and over - "Bahaia is so foxy and bad ass. We are singing about her ass. We love her ass. Don't dance to this song - you posers - unless Bahaia approves of your ass." Well, that's just a general translation b/c it doesn't translate 100% from the original Arabic.

    Did ya miss me?
    B

    Rotflmao

I NEVER have a problem dancing to Sir MixAlot!

Okay, so I think the consensus is - who cares. It actually reared its ugly head as I was listing to the eponymous song on amir sofi's cd and thought - how weird would that be to be dancing and having some body singing about Amir's tabla fantabulousness (or whatever they might be saying about him - I don't have a clue)....

PS - yes have missed you.
