    Music for cane (assaya) dance

    Hi folks!

    I need your help.

I want to built a new choreography with cane.
BUT I'm having a hard time trying to find the right music that's suit me.

I already danced to Gaye Fi Eh (Raqia's choreo which I LOVE), Louxor Baladna, Tigi Nigsim Ya Amar, Al ain Moulayiteen (even if it's a debke song).
I think Wala Zaman is a bit too slow for my style. I like Ana Saidi, Sallam Allay, Rakset Al Assaya on Shik Shak Shok CD and Aleeya Taheeya. But all these song are "over used".

(I heard a good version though of Sallam Allay on the DVD of Magdy el-Leisy, his latest for cane dance from Little Egypt. It's a sung version very modern. If someone knows on which CD I can find it, I would be happy to know.)

I know I'm very specific but I would prefer to dance on a song rather than on an instrumental piece and I like very heavy saidi with mizmar. But if you have ideas for instrumental, don't hesitate. Just tell me the title and the CD. I become a little bit desperate.

    Any ideas??? ..c::

Also, someone asked me to write a cane choreo and a more pop song. If you have any idea, feel free to share because when it comes to assaya, I prefer real folkloric. I'm kind of purist. So a pop song with mizmar and strong saidi rhythm could do the job. => Gaye fi eh did the job.

    Thanks for your help!!!

I like dancing cane to pop, so I'll address this one!

Habibi Ya Eini on the Superstars III is perfect for cane, heavy saidi beat in it.

And it's perfectly appropriate to dance cane to debke, the Lebanese dancers do it all the time, just acknowledge the rhythm

The same one I recommend everytime - Ya Booy Ya Booy from Katia's Layali al Amar CD. The assaya clip I posted in the Bhuz library (tamra-henna) is that song.

Shashkin is nice and it's on the audio list here at Bhuz. There is a nice saidi clip on Leila of cairo second album. It has lyrics to it and it's a slow to medium tempo. Not to fast.

    Thank you girls!

I really like Sashkin too, but... it's Sallam Allay named differently.

Humm Habibi Ya Eyni, not a bad choice. I have to think about it. I'm used to feel like dancing a baladi on this song, of course, not this modern version. I will try something on it. In the video gallery, Melania dances a cane dance on this song. (Sorry, it's the first time I go to this gallery. I'm more "You tubed" and enjoying Badria Ya Ahmar playlist and others).

Danidance, I got to see the clip you posted. REALLY inspiring! Right after I finish this post, I'll run to take my CD to listen to the song. Seems like my kind of choice (but as I said I need 2 songs one more earthy and one more pop).

Please, continue to give me ideas, I really do appreciate. I'm often too closed minded about my choices. It's good to have new ideas.

    (excuse my poor English...)

    Michelle!
I think Leila's saidi pieces (on vol. 1 and 2) have excellent music. But, I can't stand the synthetised mizmar. Too artificial for me.
If it wasn't about that, I would choose her medley.

I just performed my own cane choreography to music by Setrak. People loved it. Some Eypgtian lady even came up to me and gave me kiss!

The song is Sahrawiyah on the Layali Zaman CD. It starts out with mizmar and has a heavy Saidi beat. Here's a clip:

    Thanks Norma.
I don't have this CD of Setrak. I will look to buy. Of course, I just heard an extract but insn't it a lebanese debke???
It sounds heavy, I think I can really like it.

I did a mistake on another message a wrote. I wrote that Shashkin is another way to name Sallam Allay. I just noticed I'm wrong, Shashkin is Ya Ain Moulayiteen not Sallam Allay!!! Sorry!

Thanks for helping, don't stop to give idea, it's appreciated!

I absolutely adore this whole performance of Jasmine from costume, music to the dance. This piece is probably to synthisized for you too.

I just loved this performance! Thank you for sharing, it's all excellent.
Yes Michelle, I think that mizmar is synthetised BUT on stage it sounds good. And the drumming is very loud to "balance" the song.
I have this problem sometimes, I don't listen to the musics loud enough so when I choose not to take a song because it's sound articifiel, I hear it on stage for another dancer and I'm surprised how good the music is. It's like on the stage the mizmar is not that bad.

On Youtube, it said that is a song from Mona Mohamed, El Assaya. I looked on Maqam, Peko and Dahlal and didn't find it.

Does someone know where I can get this CD???

    Thanks again

For cane and stick, I would stay pick belady and saidii music. There is a good piece on "Marie Oriental Belly Dance" which you can buy from Dahlal's site. There are two good balady pieces on "Naweem" which you can also buy on Dahlal's site.

Okay, I'm confused. TH taught a saidi choreo to an edited version of this song for the Ontario workshop, but the version we were given is called Wahashtini.

In any case, I didn't realize I already had the original, on the Katia CD. So that's cool!

What does "ya booy" mean, anyone know? I hear that lyric in a couple of songs I have.

That must be a big mistake on the printout or something. I know she does a choreo to Wahashtini as well but of course we all know that song. beats me. weird.

There are 2 cane pieces on my newest album, Dancng with Genies, one is a medley. I promise there are no synthesizers anywhere on the album. You can listen to bits of them on CD Baby: http://cdbaby.com/cd/henkesh2

I bought a good cd from Lucy called Music from Egypt Mizmar Party. It has quite a few good cane songs. Currently Dar Ya Dar is the song I use for my Cane.
I also have the Dancing with Genies cd and the Saidi Medlies is one that I am working on now for my new Cane routine...

it's possible, i often get teh 2 mixed up, except debke "feels" bouncy to my, while saidi doesn't.

For the debke, I didn't talk about Habibi ya Eyni but Sahrawiyah on the Layali Zaman CD of Setrak.
To me, Habibi Ya Eyni is more a baladi piece, especially the Maya Yasbek version.

Thank you all for the great suggestions, it helps a lot.

Serpentine... I got Genies, but since I have something like 425 bellydance CDs, I wasn't finished with searching on all of them. After your message, I put your CD that I haven't really had time to listen to it since I bought it. I must say that your CD is EXCELLENT. I really like it. I will recommand it for sure for everyone looking for real traditional egyptian music.
I hope you will continue to produce other CD even if I can imagine it costs you a lot to do it.

Ziba, do you know if Little Egypt sells the CD of Lucy?

I think you are thinking of Lucy the dancer from Egypt, sorry for not being more clear, I was refering to the Vendor Lucy. I contacted her asking for great Cane Music and she refered me to the Mizmar Party cd. Her link is http://scheherezadeimports.com/items...s~99-/list.htm
I checked her online music list and don't see it there but she always has more items that she puts on her website.
She is in Egypt now, but if you contact her when she gets back she might can help you.

You're right, Sahrawiyah is debke. You can still dance it with a cane though. Folkloric lebanese cane dance is very beautiful and the steps are quite varied.

I checked with several ME musicians and they told me Sahrawiya is saidi. Regardless, it goes great with the cane. There are several rolling drum sections that are perfect for twirling.

I guess everything old is new again. The music Jasmine is dancing to was very popular in the early 80's in both the Greek and the Arabic clubs. We never did cane with it as it was used as an intro piece. I used to cringe every time they played that song for me. I have the orginal album produced in 1973 called Belly Dance for Arabian Nights by Abbud Abdel Aal and his Golden Strings. It has recently been re-released on CD.

The song is also known by the name Samah Innoba on Cairo Classics by the Sami Nossair Orchestra.

I prefer the Arabian Nights version.

Ziba, yes, I thought you were talking about Lucy of Egypt. ..l;,
I will contact your Lucy to buy your CD. I'm pretty much interested.

Norma, I'm happy that you told me on which CD to find out the Jasmin's piece... I have both CDs. I'm shy to ask for CD/music that I have, but I have so many I miss some often, sometimes. ..c::

I find it funny that you helped Shaynaz to find a music on the same CD that you refered me. I will surely buy the Setrak CD Layali Zaman.

I'm not a fan of Setrak so I own just a couple of his.
Do you have suggestions of his CD I should buy?

For the ladies who loves to do cane on a pop song, what do you think of Baddalaa Alek from Nancy Ajram????????

"Habibi Ya Eini might actually be a debke, TamraHenna said it might be because it is often very close to Saiidi"

Habibi ya Eini is very classic beledi not saidi or depke. It was written in the 80's by Lebanese composer George Yazbeck and performed by his daughter Maya Yazbeck who is sister Basem Yazbeck, drummer to Amani. We always performed it after a slow taxim as a beledi then we would go into a drum solo.

Some of the newer remixes jazz it up a lot so it sounds different but if you listen to older versions you can tell it's beledi.

Nouhanne's new version sounds more like saidi:
    http://arabic-media.com/clip/ra/nour...bi_ya_eini.htm

Here's a more classical interpretation sung by Nancy Ajram.

    http://video.aol.com/video-search/Ya.../id/2373626437

    And the original by Maya:
