    Rhythms for belly dance

    http://halas-place.com/music.html

Thought this might be helpful. It's a little easier to understand than Ja's.

thank you for this, i often get confused if the rhythm is the backbeat -v- very prominent in the song.

The Halas Place is not to be recommended - it has mistakes (see that "malfuf" - which is 332, not 422!!!!). I have a rather disfavorable opinion for people who spend more time on making things pretty, rather than making them correct.

I prefer Ja's site myself as he goes into a better explanation and he has sound examples.

I really like this site. I like how it describes the origin of the musical notation. Those of us who grew up learning to play western music were taught the time signatures like they were handed down by god and it was the only way to count music. it's eye-opening to learn that other cultures did not necessarily use that way of counting/notating music (and hence why sometimes it feels difficult to reconcile a middle eastern rhythm with a time signature)

I put it in my bookmarks for future reference. Thanks Norma!
