In some respects this conveys a good message: We don't exactly know, it's mostly a big mess ;-)

Um....what does Mata Hari have to do with Belly Dancing? Also, hated the set up of the web page. It looks so lazily done.

Well summed up! Also add "inaccurate" as they throw in Indian dance, Mata Hari and Salome into the mix.

I don't see how it was a history of belly dance, but dare I admit that I loved that first painting of the woman resting by the pool?

Some interesting reading yet very disjointed. I expect a timeline if I am going to sitdown and read a great deal of info. Someone worked hard to put that together, even though it is not real pro looking. They must really love this art .

I haven't opened the site yet but I have a Turkish bellydance CD that explains the history of bellydance. According to this CD, the Turkish are solely responsible for bellydance coming into being!! Needless to say I definitely laughed out loud at that one!! ..l;,..l;,..l;,..l;,

I wanna lie down and take a nice nap on some fuzzy animal skins by a stone lily pond, while wearing an opulent flame-colored dress, in a climate where it's, oh, about 76 degrees out. But instead I have to put on these clunky boots and stuff my hair in a hat and go out and freeze my lips off and shovel some more snow. Where, I ask you, is the romance, the glamour . . ?,m::
    Sorry, non-intellectual response!

I hear ya! I am dying, just dying, from this weather. . .I should've been born rich instead of good looking! <LOL> BTW, for those of you who don't know me, that's a JOKE!! ..l;,..l;,

According the Grace and Fitness book by Marta, it was the pygmies who taught the Ancient Egyptians. Lots of interesting theories out there.

But agree with what everyone else has said so far, I found this particular website confusing and disjointed.

Great artwork; questionable and confusing 'timeline'.

And Mata Hari claimed (she made of number of interesting claims!) to be the daughter of an Eastern concubine from whom she learned the belly dance.
