What is the difference between Golden Era and Classic Egyptian?

The post states it all. Are they the same thing? I love the Older style which I once referred to as "old school" and quickly found out that wasn't right at all (right Zummarad?..l;,) but seriously, I would like to move in that direction with my own dancing for now and want to study performers and dance clips of it. Thanks lovely Bhuzzers

Re: What is the difference between Golden Era and Classic Egyptian?

I think the Golden Era refers to that time in Egypt when we saw the legends emerge and dominate Raks Sharki. Examples of those from the Golden Era are Samia Gamal, Tahia Carioca, Suhair Zaki and Nagwa Fouad to name a few. I think these women would fit into that "old school" category or what we consider to be the Golden Era.

I see Classic Egyptian referring to a particular dance styling that many of the Legends displayed in their performances and in their costuming to a certain degree. Classic Egyptian doesn't usually have as many western influences as modern Egyptian and/or American Cabaret. Influences such as jazz and hip-hop, for example are generally not present in a Classic Egyptian performance. It seems to me that the physical focus of Classic Egyptian involves the core of the body adding its own element to the music while communicating the emotional content of the music. Mona El Said is an excellent example of of Classic Egyptian Styling.

There's a fine line between the different styles of our dance. I think there is a lot of merit in studying the techniques and approaches of those who have come before us - ie: those from the Golden Era. And I'm pretty sure your dance will be enriched as a result of it.

Dahlena is a great teacher of the classic style.

"Golden Era" would be pre-revolution (or dance the same as pre-revolution) ie as appeared in the movies. Dancers include Samia Gamal, Naimea Akef etc.

Classic Egyptian would be a little later 1950s-1970s. I'd be thinking Souheir Zaki and Fifi Abdou. Less of the big romantic costumes (for Orientale) but similar technique and music.
