Simple veil pieces - need music recomendations

    Hi everyone

I have a Hen party coming up on Sat (my life has been crazy so this is literally the first spare minute I have to think about it). They asked for 2 hours lesson so I was going to branch out into veils for the second hour (simple moves – my experience is the more colourful sparkly things they get to play with the better).

Anyone got any ideas for nice short ‘veil’ pieces – slow swooshy ones for complete beginners. My expertise is in 'proper' Egyptian music so I don’t really have any ideas myself.

Hmmm...the best piece I've found for simple swooshy veil is Harem by REG - but it is NOT 'proper' Egyptian music...it is simple in it's structure though, with a recurring musical motif, and about 4 mins long...

    for veil teaching i use

    - zeina (some versions better than others)

    - some songs from "very cairo I and II" (these are teaching cds, you can get them on www.sakkara.de, i recomend them to everyone!)

    - the first two minutes of batwanis beek

    - several songs from omar faruk tekbilek (emotional, dreamy, not too long, you can do heaps with this)

I never thought of Zeina for veil DOH! The version on Belly Dance: Mohamed Abdel Wahab is quite short and cute, although (from memory) I think it fades out which might not be what you're looking for...

i use the one from Bellydance from Egypt: Gamil Gamal for the students mostly and do a veil choreo to that, sometimes the one from hossam ramzy's best of mohammed abdul wahab for myself (but only veil for part of that). there's a version with singing on the BDSS vol I, and i have a few others...

These are some of the songs I like to use for American-style veil work:
    • Jemilleh (on "The Magic of John Bilezikjian")
    • Sala Sanna (also on "The Magic...")
    • Bir Demet Yaseman (a nice version on "Sirocco" by John Bilezikjian)
    • Tien Afto (on "Saroyan Sings Oriental Bouquet")
    • Cleopatra (on one of the volumes of "Gems of the Middle East" by Mary Ellen Donald)
    • Norits Karoon Yegav (on volume 1 of "Gems")
    • Erev Shel Shoshonim (on one of the volumes of "Gems")
    • Bagdad (on Eddie Kochak's "Strictly Belly Dance Volume 1", actually is a medley of Bir Demet Yasemen, Cleopatra, and El Fen)

I always preferred using a rhumba or bolero for veil work. Eddie Kochack's Silver Anniversary album had one I used to love. I can't recall which track it was. The second one I think. Many of his albums had great songs for veil.

Miserlou was always a classic veil piece.

well i'm gonna be different. i like "ice queen" & transglobal underground "tongue of flame". i perfer more drama because i like spins & throws. personally i can bear alot of typical veil music it's too sleepy. tina

Fahtiem's CDs have (as one might guess) incredibly dreamy music for veil pieces!

Bolero & Rhumba are good for American veil work

Erev Shel Shoshonim ("Salute to Israel") 3:30 minutes
Atlantis ("Atlantis" by John Bilezikjian) it is a bolero
    Jemilleh ("Magic" by John Bilezikjian)
Sabor A Mi ("Romances" by Luis Miguel)
    Desert Rose (Sting)

Eddie Kochak's Strictly Bellydance Vol. 6 has a great SHORT piece for veil. It's like 2 minutes. I used it for my beginner students.

I believe it's number 8 or 9. Lots of "texture" to the music - stops and starts in the melody, a slow steady drum beat backing it up. The melody is "dreamy" and sounds like "swanning about with a scrap of fabric" music. ..l;,

Salla Sana is a beautiful Turkish melody- Wave/Raise your hand. It is on "Magic" but also on "Brothers of the Baladi" (also translated in English).

For beginners I like to use "The Sensual Art of Bellydance - Slow rhythms" by Ron Wagner.

When I introduce veil to a class I always use Lorena McKinnett's Mummers Song because it's slow and swoopy. It's a long piece so I burned it with a fade out which works great. Lovely, lovely song...
