What do you guys think of this drum solo?
Hello everyone,
What do you guys think of this dancer: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IXgll-qFVk&feature=related]YouTube - WARDA ....solo tabla, dub 2006 dvd[/ame]
I thought she was very good and I loved the accents she did and if I am not mistaken I see some Samba influence hmmm.... Anyways, I think she was great.
Hugs,
Amani

I am a HUGE snob about drum solos and I liked hers. She hit all the accents but with her own style, really good shimmies and locks. Good energy too.
I didn't like how she just stopped and clapped a few times, but that was also a drummer, he shouldn't have done that. I feel that a drum solo builds in energy like a spiral up into a big exciting finale, taking long breaks sort of kills the build up.

I really enjoyed that. She and the drummer must rehearse together. Although I also didn't like the little breaks and then she claps. It's like she's clapping for herself. It kind of kills the build up. Otherwise, very nice. Thanks for sharing.

Okay, at the very beginning, I started singing, "we will, we will, ROCK YOU!" ..l;,
She's obviously a very skilled and talented dancer. My only criticism is that she seemed at times to be working her isolations and shimmies a little too energetically, and they came off a bit forceful and "hard" looking. But I think that comes down to personal preference and taste.

I wonder if she would have got more applause at the end if she let the tension build without stopping

Re: What do you guys think of this drum solo?
I can't jump on the band wagon with this one.
I agree that is was a nice performance. She has good energy and appeared like she was having fun. These are the things that make a good performance, but I see a lot of problems with her technique.
Its just not clean and crisp and the way she is using her entire back for her hip locks at about :45 I see potential for injury. She is not using her lower abs or lower back muscles she is forcing it with her entire back. When she does the level change at 1:49 she is using her lower obliques for the single hip bumps as she assends and it appears to me like she is struggling or forcing the move. Bigger is not necessarily better and she is making everything bigger than it need to be. Her posture needs a lot of work cause she is not keeping her hips tucked. So in my opinion she needs to improve her technique and posture.
Other than that is was a fun performance to watch. I liked her enthusiasm.

I think she's got some great accents that hit them right on the mark. She's very energetic and keeps your attention too. I don't see the samba influence though.

Re: What do you guys think of this drum solo?
Very interesting. I agree, she is good, but the arms were somehow not expressive and making audience to clap with her was kind of taking away from the performance.

Strong, athletic and fluid. Crisp and sinuous by turns - Yes...there are times that look as though the lower back is being crunched, but could that be an optical illusion due to the magnifitude of the booty?

Re: What do you guys think of this drum solo?
I think that answer needs to come from the person that made that claim. Don't just say something is bad without explanation as to what specifically was bad?
Personally, I looked at it again and I saw nothing wrong with the arms or hands. Remember its a drum solo so you can use your arms and hands anyway you desire for effect. Yes there maybe better way to use the arms to frame the hips, and other accents, but I would not say its right or wrong just a matter of personal expression. I did not see any helicopter hands, and some of the poses were not to my taste but it doesnt make them bad or wrong.
She had great energy and enthusiasm and I liked that in her performance...Last edited by AngelaDiCaprio; 01-23-2009 at 06:21 PM. Reason: adding more comments

Hey great drum solo, but i agree with the comments about some dodgy technique and posture but she has got really high heels on so that might be a reason for that

Re: What do you guys think of this drum solo?
i found that the arm movements had little control and were jerky at times. they also didnt frame the movements. she also had hellocopter hands a few times. i cant poitn out specifics right now because im at work and cant rewatch the clip..
i agree with some of the others that pointed out that her hipwork seemed forced, and made it less graceful.. but shes still got awesome musicality and can easily tone that down

Re: What do you guys think of this drum solo?
I agree with everything Angela said. This is why I HATE when dancers wear heels -- they make you arch your back, and throw your entire body out of alignment. Once you arch, everything goes downhill from there in terms of posture and technique.
As far as her arms and hands go, I thought they were bad, too. It almost seemed like she was using her upper body to drive her shimmies at times - there was a lot of tension in her shoulders, upper arms and hands, and that takes away from her shimmies. Shimmies should look effortless, like they are just falling off of your body in waves, and hers looked too strained.
That being said, I'd KILL for her body and her costume!!! Hawt!!

I'm not a fan of the flipper hands. I find myself counting hand flips rather than concentrating on the dancing. It's like when someone is giving a speech and keeps saying "uh" every few words.

Re: What do you guys think of this drum solo?
I cant agree with the flipper hands as you call it. I counted thirty flips in total and some of that was just one hand flipping as the other stayed still. Many, about a third were due to arm position changes. This in my opinion does not constitute flipper hands in a five and half minute performance.
