When a Lebanese dancer does Melaya...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVfAcrHkAS0"]YouTube - Bassima باسمة / اسكندراني[/ame]
This is Bassema, a Lebanese dancer who did a stint in Egypt. Here she is doing her interpretation of Melaya Leff. This is the funniest video I've watched in a long time. I was laughing hysterically by the end of it. She didn't mean to be hilarious since clearly a lot of thought went into the choreography but goodness this is ridiculous! ..l;,

Re: When a Lebanese dancer does Melaya...
Here's her version of Leylet Hob (more like Leylet ZOB)...
The extended floorwork section is a mess.

Re: When a Lebanese dancer does Melaya...
That was...interesting! I would love to see the faces of the audience up close. I'm suprised she didn't kill herself in those heels. She must have been exhausted. I remember doing that parachute-looking thing back in what, elementary school?!
That Leylet Hob vid, oh wow! OMG, I wonder if that was an Egyptian crowd?! Either way, I'm sure the audience was just as confused as we are!
And I'd like to up you on the new title...Leylet FOB.
Thanks for sharing!

Re: When a Lebanese dancer does Melaya...
I very much doubt that is meant to be anything but an entertaining romp. Comedians work really hard at their craft, a thing isn't funny only if it's not very good. She didn't mean to be hilarious since clearly a lot of thought went into the choreography
I'm totally making other people do my prop work for me now, though. The thought of having minions to hold wings behind me or move my veil around is oddly appealing.
She's certainly *energetic* and the floor work was kind of insane but I've seen ghastlier dancers overall. What does her being Lebanese have to do with it?

Re: When a Lebanese dancer does Melaya...
the unusual use of melaya leff reminded me of the fabric in "revelations", all be it a rough use.

i applaud her courage to do something different with staging, props and choreography. i didn't watch the "floor sweeper".Last edited by sabrinabellydancer; 01-31-2009 at 03:32 AM.

Mohamed Kafazy teaches a melaya choreo to "Warda". I mean GOD. Has nobody told him the rules?
Unfortunately it's not on YouTube otherwise I could post When An Egyptian Male Reda Dancer Does Melaya.

Re: When a Lebanese dancer does Melaya...
Oh,I remember Bassima dancing at a Gulf club I (accidently) stepped into!!!
I was enough puzzled by her patent leather thigh boots and Rob Halford cap before the dance started..
(Despite a quite massive backup she never made it in Egypt)
Here she celebrates Christmas:

Re: When a Lebanese dancer does Melaya...
LOL!!! I have photos from when I saw her dance last April . . . I really need to sent all that off to Gilded Serpent like I keep promising Lynette.
I have a photo of her Turkish drop in those high heels . . . hmmm, think it is the boots too . . and her crotch is towards the main audience (we were sitting on the side).
I agree that her Milaya is hilarious . . .it was to an uber fast version of some music I really like but dance more baladi.
I personally felt she danced more for the men.Last edited by cbarros; 01-31-2009 at 10:15 AM.

Re: When a Lebanese dancer does Melaya...
From reading her facebook fan page, she's back in Lebanon performing at Awtar in Downtown Beirut. The clip of Leylet Hob is filmed in Lebanon not Egypt.
The reason why I mention the Lebanese bit is that she's an incredibly spastic dancer which seems to be the current norm for any Lebo dancer these days (except for Suha Deeb). Another Lebanese dancer is Alissar and she's much too fast for my tastes as well! I like Lebanese style but goodness...I think I dance fast but this is exhausting. The comic value of the Lebo Melaya should not be downplayed...it's TOO FUNNY.
Doing a Turkish drop with your va-jayjay towards the audience is so typically Modern Lebanese...

Re: When a Lebanese dancer does Melaya...
I kept thinking that maybe because she was acting out the lyrics the comedy was just lost in translation; however, that Turkish crotch drop at the end was toooo much.

Re: When a Lebanese dancer does Melaya...
Yousra does it all the time. ..g.: What never ceases to amaze me is the fan following that alot of the Lebanese dancers have on these youtube clips, mostly young people or beggining dancers who take it so personally and become outraged when you say that you don't like the clip or the dancing. Sheesh.

Re: When a Lebanese dancer does Melaya...
I just noticed that Lynette (Gilded Serpent) has posted one of my photos of Bassimah in the coming attractions box!! LOL, not the one of the Turkish drop . . . but check out her use of wings!!!
I take this as a sign that she is getting close to getting the article ready to post.

Re: When a Lebanese dancer does Melaya...
As I am currently reading up on Melaya, I saw the topic and thought 'Great!'.
Oh, I don't know. It may be the Melaya Leff for the new millennium! It still kind of in keeping with the theatrical story; girl goes and flirts with the boys. But now she goes off to a westernised club with them, shows she can jive a little. Drinks much too much, acts like a tart, dances out of control, is advised to calm down by a fatherly figure, breaks free and dances madly again, boys having a great laugh and then she collapses in a paralytic heap at the end!
<Removes tongue from cheek and starts ROTFLMAO>.
I haven't had a look at the Leylet Hob yet ....
