Yes! Yes! I hear lots of us complain that we suck at zills [or moving while dancing & playing zills], and we think that we'll never get there - but sheesh, you are learning to play a musical instrument.

It takes as much skill & practice as the dancing and it takes time. Maybe twice as hard as playing other instruments because you need to actually move in a related fashion- face it, have you ever seen a drummer bust out a series of moves while banging on the drum set? I didn't think so. [Except maybe those old tyme guys who play the accordian, knee drum, jingle bells and sing whilst bouncing down the street -- but we're alot prettier.

At least, that's what I tell myself. I'm going back into my car to practice.

And ... no matter how bad you suck on the zills, it's nothing compared to listening to someone just learning to play the tuba. Or bagpipes.

Zilling is not that common *in some areas*.

Kawakib is a sweet and lovely person in addition to being a wonderful ziller and dancer. ..g.:

Some dancers in my area play them, some don't -- but none have the skill being shown in this clip.

Yeah, she is amazing. I used to really like Tulay Karaca playing zills and still like her, but Kawakib took her top spot. I can never get tired of her! She rocks!

Kawakib is a sweetie. This show was filmed some time ago, and I believe that at the time she was the only one to dance accompanied only by cymbals. Quite a tour de force!

Here's another friend doing a cymbal solo: Amina Salah, formerly a Baltimore gal and now living in Colorado.

Thank you so much for your nice remarks! You made MY day~
TULAY KARAJA was my inspiration for this! Not that I do Turkish style, far from it, but her cymbal solo rocked so much I had to try it too. She is the bomb for Turkish style dance -

If you are beginner at cymbals I have youtube clips on my channel (that illustrate text articles in Zaghareet, but I know reading about rhythms is hard lol)

    best wishes you all

    Hi Kawakib,

OMG it IS you! Now I am very glad to tell you directly how much you have inspired me! Tulay is great, but then to play like Tulay is an exceptional talent, which you definitely have. You can come to my place as a 3am zill brigade and I would be honored ..l;,..l;,..l;,

I thought I am not a total beginner at zills, but after seeing that video I realized I am a TOTAL beginner. I admire your talent, you are an inspiration to us all.

    Hugs,
    Amani

Here in the DC/MD/VA area I know Artemis Mourat requires zills and I'm pretty sure Anthea does. They are a requirement with Yasmin during special sessions.
Shems has her students using them. Lotus...maybe her troupe?
Other teachers? I don't think zills are a big focus based on what I see. It's a shame as audiences love them and some venues expect them.

Also in the DC/MD area, Antonia teaches zills in all her classes, and Piper teaches them to level 2 and up as well.

Definitely something to aspire to.. I know I have great difficulty with zills, and find that it compromises my performance and technique. some people are just born to do it!!!

    Re: I love this woman!!!!

Here in LA it's a mixed bag. I learned to dance with zills in hand. Took me a long time to learn how to dance WITHOUT THEM. many teachers here teach them as workshops or as the topic of the month. But many are modern egyptian based and hold the "they don't play them over there".

    Personally, I LOVE zills!
