I had an email this weekend that Ranya's Baladi Taqsim dvd set was being shipped! Yeah. I cannot wait to get mine. Anyone else preorder this one?

Slightly off-subject, I'm so excited by Ranya's development into such an amazing dancer. Knew her when she was a baby dancer, taking Bobby Farrah's workshops.

Got mine yesterday from WDNY--have only watched about 15 minutes so far but am very much liking what I've seen!

I got mine on Friday. Of course I was coughing up gunk and feverish so I couldn't really dance but:

It's an incredible amount of information. First the musicians play a couple of typical baladis, then go over the various sections of the music with little clips. She talks a little about the difference between the men's and women's dance. The she goes over technique, specifically how to make your moves look Egyptian. There are a couple of performances.

The second dvd is RR dancing a couple of baladis. First she takes you throught the the whole thing, showing you typical moves used in that section. Then there are clips for each section of the baladi so you can watch and practice just one piece.

An excellent value and very infomative.

I just placed my order on her website after reading this - I can't wait!

Waahhh! I am home sick with the coughing up gunk thing too and I WANT MY DVDS!!!! NOW!! ,m:: Holding breath, turning red, rolling and kicking on the floor. Well, maybe breath holding is counterindicated . But I could sure use those babies right now. All the sweeter for the wait. . .

see, this is exactly why I frequent bhuz! Thank you for the heads up. Bhuz is where I first got turned on to how awesome Ranya is - and I can't wait to get my dvds now.

I borrowed one to watch last night ( couldn't wait for my own order to ship ) and it's absolutely everything I hoped for and more. I loved the long section on the musical breakdown, and hearing about the different types of baladis that are played in different regions or types of occasions. I loved hearing about how people would dance to it differently, men or women. I just loved it so much. It explained far more than I ever could have expected. I can't wait to play some of my favorite baladi progressions and try to figure out where they fall based on the way they start out, and all that. I knew I loved beledi but I didn't know how much I loved it until I got this DVD - I loved the section where she talked about being strong, grounded, confident, feeling like "yourself" - that's exactly how the music has always made me feel but now I know why. Wow, what an amazing DVD. And I haven't even done the technique section yet.

I have been debating about getting these. I don't usually use instructional videos, but I spent much of last year focusing heavily on beledi taqsim and improv with my advanced class, so I wanted to see how others are teaching (and learn more myself, of course!).

...that tells em you are my kind of person!! I love it! So I just ordered your instructional series, and am particularly stoked to sneak in under the radar for the pre-order discounts and free gifts. The DVDs look great, can't wait! (But I will, of course, as part of my ongoing training. ;) )

Incredibly informative and utterly enchanting. And the stone-faced drummers are a stitch!

Oh, I guess my good intentions to purchase directly from the artist was rewarded by sneaking into a good deal. Lesson learned: Do the right thing. It works.

As the editor of this DVD and a long time student of Ranya herself, I am so happy that everyone loves the DVD! Woo! I spent a lot of hours editing this expansive, amazing project and decided that I would do a taqsim beledi for Ranya's annual holiday gala show. Made sense, right?..g.:
With the knowledge that I took from the DVD, mostly doing the drills, plus workshops with the musicians in taqsim beledi (Nabawy is awesome!) here is my final outcome. I worked with musicians in rehearsal and in workshops but this performance was a total improvisation.

I'll have to watch that video later when I'm not at work.

I did the technique section last night and just want to say - DO NOT SKIP POSTURE. You might think - yeah I know how to have proper posture. But this was revolutionary stuff (for me anyway) - more than just the keep your back straight, shoulders down, etc. And she demonstrates it with props - you have to see to believe.

After that, doing all the technique felt so damn good because I was engaging all the right muscles. Literally felt good. Can't wait to get home and do more.

Mine arrived today! Hope to have time to watch it this weekend.
