    Re: Chiftetelli advice

Artemis speaks in workshops of Turkish musicians 'dropping' the last of the cifti rhythm so that it can sound very 9/8. Also very fast.

Older AmCab-or-term-du-jour musicians did fast cifti; one that comes right to mind is Eddie Kochak. When dancing to it, it's just treated as another 4 rather than as a gooey taxim piece.

    Re: Chiftetelli advice

there had been several discussions about Greek Tsiftetelli on bhuz.
Here is one of the latest.
    http://www.bhuz.com/forum/rest-belly...en-greece.html

Tha Spaso Koupes is one of the Greek Tsiftetelli classics. It belongs to the Smyrneiko tradition (music that was brought by people from Asia Minor during the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey) that is part of the Rebetiko music. The most common rhythm in Greek Tsiftetelli songs is the 4/4 rhythm similar to the Egyptian Maksoum (Dt_tD_t_).

Another great example of this genre is Miserlou.

It is important not to confuse this musical genre with what the dancers commonly refer to as the Chiftetelli rhythm (8/4 D_kt_kt_D_D_t_tk).
