Fantastic, entertaining piece, Lauren. Brava to you and your students!

Re: the skirt washing move, Artemis teaches it as well, and she mentioned in the workshop where I learned it from her that it's one of the few skirt movements that Turkish Roman dancers actually use.

I'd like to learn more footwork before I do another piece.

The skirt washing came from Tayyar Adkeniz, although he choreographs it to slower music and I like it better his way!
I can't get audio to play on youtube videos on my machine for some reason, but even without the music, I love it! (I have that song and was playing it in my head.)

If you're looking for footwork (and don't mind pausing and rewinding a million times), I got some good ideas from this video of Reyhan Tuzsuz:

That said, Tayyar covered the same patterns in the workshop I took with him (which also used the skirt-washing), so you might have already seen them. (When, oh when, is he coming back to Boston?!?!?!?)

These Liz Strong videos have a lot of good footwork too:

As for teaching the rhythm, I gave a "how to deal when the band plays a 9/8 and you know nothing about karsilama" workshop this time last year, and used a few different ways to count the rhythm. Most of the students seemed to learn best when we counted it as "apple, apple, apple, pineapple".

Very nice, Lauren! You should be proud of your girls. And they obviously have a great teacher/choreographer.

they do use tambourine but not in real gypsy authentic show. I like tambourine and would use it as a fusion piece and not to call it Roman. I have one in youtube, I should change the name of it perhaps ;-(
