Baladi lovers - new CD
I just a copy of Hoda Sinbati's Ala Mahlik. She is Dina's baladi singer. Each piece has two versions--one with taqsim and mawaal and the other arranged for shorter performances. I love her version of Ala Waraq al-Foul, which Fatme Serhan also does. Hoda's version has a "sweeter" quality but she does embody that same earlthiness that Fatme's voice has.
Good stuff.

LOVE, LOVE this CD. If you buy the CD (not the download) you'll get a GREAT booklet with all the lyrics etc. SO worth it!

Re: Baladi lovers - new CD
Oddly enough, mine didn't come with the booklet but had a card inside that you have to fill out to register your cd and then they send you the booklet. Kinda wierd. But I didn't buy it directly from Serpentine. My other CDs from them I did buy directly and they did have the liner notes booklet. Maybe that is something they are doing to keep track of who has the CDs???? Anyone have any other ideas?

Re: Baladi lovers - new CD
I bought the CD from Yasmin and received a printout of all the lyrics (with indications of which were in the long versions and which were in the short versions, awesome!), but not a booklet per se. She sometimes mails the booklets out later though.
It's a great album--I danced to the short version of Souq Bena Ya Ousta this weekend in my galibeya and khul khal :-)

Re: Baladi lovers - new CD
Yasmine released the 3 last cd this way. I think we are so anxious about getting the music she must get tired of the e-mails asking when the cd will come out.
She realeases the music cd first and the booklet comes out a few months later.
So when you buy the cd later on the booklet is included, but if you buy the cd early you get the little card.

Re: Baladi lovers - new CD
Yes, this is true. I bought Dancing with Genies and Pulse of the Sphinx as soon as they came out, and the booklets were not printed yet. Both occasions, Yasmin sent them out as soon as they were ready.
These Sands of Time albums are definitely worth buying as CDs just for the booklets. Normally I download if I can, but for these I'll always buy the CDs.

Re: Baladi lovers - new CD
Yes, exactly as you ladies described.
The music is done before the booklet is completed as she has to know exactly what she is translating and writing about...and the booklet ALWAYS involves a lot of research, work and editing...which in the end take a lot of time.
When you buy the CD early on you'll get a card. Send in the card and as soon as she finishes the booklet she will mail it to you.
If you wait to buy the CD or if you are purchasing her other CDs the booklet will already be enclosed.

Re: Baladi lovers - new CD
I see that this CD contains the elusive Al Helou Fil Veranda that Dina always dances to in her shows. (why did I always think it was EL HELWA Fil Veranda?)
It's the first time I've ever seen this song on any CD.

Re: Baladi lovers - new CD
It's a very good cd. I've been listening to it most days on my way to work. I like that you have two options with the songs. It makes them 'hafla friendly'.
When I got my cd, I didn't have a card to fill in but I sent an email to Serpentine (I bought mine via CD Baby) and gave her my details for when the booklet is ready.

Re: Baladi lovers - new CD
Just another detail that impressed me, apart from the music being yummy: I got the CD, sent in the card, and 2 weeks later, received a printout of the lyrics, transliterated and translated, with a short hand-written note explaining that the booklet will come later. I did not expect that level of customer care - hats off!

Re: Baladi lovers - new CD
As far as I know the liner notes come (or the card for it) when you buy the actual CD, not the MP3 download.
Reasoning? Encourage to buy the CD with the added value of the liner notes. Paying the band (which not all producers do), paying all music rights (which not all CD producers do) and producing a CD like this is an enormous financial undertaking - supporting the producer more enables the producer to support the band more (ie- pay for more music), which in turns helps to support more good dance and good belly dance music. Buying the full CD with the liner notes pays off for all of us in the long run in this particular case, I believe. ..g.: The full notes are worth the extra couple bucks!

Hi Candi,
Please post your response. I'm in the same situation as you but I don't want to be flooding their inbox.
Thanks.

Me - I just sent the card. I'm assuming it is our reward for buying the music. After all how much is a stamp to New Zealand?

Re: Baladi lovers - new CD
Hello all,
I am so sorry to the first 4 people who purchased Ala Mahlik from CD Baby. I was in such a rush to get the CDs out that I forgot to put the cards in.
CD Baby is wonderful. They tell me who purchased what. So for those of you who purchased the album from them please just send me an email and I will send you the lyrics right away. I wanted the cards so that I had a record of who should receive the booklet once it's finally finished...
I am extremely ashamed. I got caught up in my new finger cymbal project with Artemis and let the booklet for Ala Mahlik slide for a while. I will finish it - the translation and transliterations are done - but not the articles on the various regions and the traditions that inspired the songs (which plants she sings about, what jewelry they wore, how they weave baskets, etc). I have the illustrations, but haven't written the articles, nor done the layout.
There is something about discovering how to play Egyptian sagat that is all consuming, particularly with the instruments they sent me from Mohammed Ali Street. Egyptian finger cymbals - sagat
Again, I apologize. Send me an email and I will send you what is ready.
Yasmin

Re: Baladi lovers - new CD
Thank you Serpentine and how lovely of you to reply on here. I will email you with my details. Actually I feel quite good to be one of the first four people to have rushed onto CD Baby and bought it. I like the CD a lot and am looking forward to the notes which sound fascinating and the Sagat CD too.
Thanks again

Update from New Zealand
Enjoying the CD and I have just received the lyrics (with transliteration and translation). Booklet not quite ready yet. It is great that we can have access to this type of music.
