persian dancing
hey all
i sponsored a workshop in persian dancing last night, participated myself and really enjoyed it. a while back i enjoyed a private lesson persian dancing as well. i'd really like to get more into this... so am hunting for a local/near enough teacher
BUT while still looking for that, which might take a while to find, can anyone recomend any dvds, either instructional or performance footage?
thanks!

I don't really know about DVDs. But there's an American dancer who specializes in Silk Road dances. She also came to Switzerland to teach Persian dance and I have some of her dances on an older German show video.
If only I could remember her name... She's really well known.... *total blackout*
Ah! Strangely I remembered her website! http://www.silkroaddance.com/
Of course: Laurel Victoria Gray - check her out!

Helene Eriksenn & Robyn Friend both have persian dance videos. Also Laurel Victoria Grey and the Silk Road Dance theatre probably have something.
Helene works in Germany extensively and so you might be able to find a gap in her scehdule. Robyn visits the UK every so often, but it's rarely well publicised.
Good luck and keep me informed cos I might be tempted to come out of retirement for one of them.

Hi Artemisia,
I think Persian dancing is beautiful, and I like that very masculine Persian hat dance too...(what ever the name of it actually is).
There should be a lovely Persian performance on I think IAMED 6 (but it might be This is Belly Dance) - I can't quite remember - it's by Louchia here in Los Angeles. Very beautiful dance and gorgeous costume.

Reyhan,
The youtube comments say she has a studio in Los Angeles. I'm wondering if indeed she's the owner of one on the Westside of town. I'll snoop around and see if it's her.

Robyn Friend
I took a class with Robyn Friend; she was teaching at Rocky's weeklong. She's a great teacher! Her web page lists a video

Jamileh is excellent. I own one of her performance dvd's. It has about 6-8 performances on there. She's a fave in the Persian crowds. I'd love to learn the baba charem (not sure if I spelled that right). She does this dance in the dvd.

I bought Shahrzad's instruction DVDs and they're excellent! She's a beautiful dancer and the videos are very well done.

Re: persian dancing
I'm a Persian dancer in California with the dance company Ballet Afsaneh. I don't know why it is not as well known, since it has been around for nearly 3 decades. Go to dancesilkroad.org for info on the company. Miriam Peretz, the assistant director, is going on a European tour this Summer (2012). If you love Persian dance I am sure you have seen her work on YouTube. Her site is miriamdance.com for more info. If you are interested in learning Baba Karam (the funny dance in men's clothes), I recommend you search for that name on youtube for many examples.
