    Pump it, Ruby! Pump it!

Is it just me, or has Ruby taken hip lifts with a slightly reclined posture into something that looks like it belongs in a choreography for the Indian from the Village People?

[ame="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1v6c0_ruby-ehab-tawfiq-hesham-abas_music"]Dailymotion - Ruby - Ehab tawfiq - Hesham Abas, a video from Princesshayat. ruby, ehab, tawfiq, hesham, abbas@@AMEPARAM@@http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/x1v6c0@@AMEPARAM@@x1v6c0[/ame]

Maybe it's the fact that she's doing it next to two men, but it looks really vulgar to me. What does everybody else think?

I don't really care for the corresponding arm action with her hip lifts, but nothing about that looked vulgar to me.

Maybe she was busting out her best "white girl" hip lift moves... it didn't look vulgar yo me but it did look like she was uncomfortable

Actually, the closed fists and awkwardness reminded me more of Elaine from Seinfeld!

She's referencing her video in which she does the same move. She IS uh "working out" in the music video...or pseudo working out anyway.

OMG, this could be the next fitness sensation - a combination bellydance/spin class with a bellydance/free weights warm-up.

She looks like alot of singers who can't dance is all. She doesn't look all that comfy in her body. She needs to get some Tina Turner styling.

I was thinking along the same lines. She just looks like any singer bopping about to music. I did not think that it was vulgar.

Vulgar? Nope, way back in the early 70s in AmCab, we did that move - lean back and push that hip to the ceiling! No one complained. I think I still have a picture of myself doing it...l;,

The problem isn't the reclined hip lifts so much as the accompanying hand gestures and the proximity to the two males as she was doing it. Lots of dancers do that hip lift, but they use a less aggressive frame and they don't stand right next to a couple of guys while they're dancing.

Re: Pump it, Ruby! Pump it!

Well, looking at the first video with Walid Toufik and Hisham Abbas, that hip bump with the pumping gesture is the same move that Raqia Hassan taught a few years ago in her choreography to "Haramt Ahebak" - it expressed a phrase in the song that meant "And DON'T BOTHER me!" It was meant to express the singer's frustration with her loved one. Perhaps the meaning in what's being sung in this video has something to do with both the hip move and the gesture. I don't interpret her hip bump and hand gesture in that video as vulgar whether she's near two men or not. Now, if she were thrusting both hips (pelvic area) forward while pumping her arms, that would be vulgar.

The hand gesture/hip lift is done by lots of dancers, but something about Ruby's version just looks wrong to me. I know I have seen Hadia occasionally do something like it, but I seem to recall her using a level change more than a layback on the move, so her posture was more upright. Maybe it is the layback that is bothering me, or maybe I just have a low tolerance for how much force I can take on the "lock and load." YMMV, as they say.

Incidentally, the other singer is Ehab Tawfiq, not Walid Toufik. Walid is Lebanese and about ten years older than Ehab, who is Egyptian. Walid also has a mellower signing voice. Ehab has kind of a reedy/nasal tone when he sings, but you'd never know that from the way Hisham is hogging the microphone in that clip.

Yep, YMMV on Ruby's execution of the movement. ..g.: Oops, was very tired when posting and misstyped Ehab's name.....c:: I knew he was Ehab and should've checked that I typed the right Toufik before posting. Thanks for correcting me!

she's kinda of like a female version of p. diddy dancing. can hear the beat but no great moves. also remember, this is not someone from north america dancing, so the connotation of the movement all together could very easily be something different than we would think of it. ie, smiling too much in France means you are mentally incapacitated... just sayin...
