Thread: Nubian dance--who teaches it?

So. Are there any "masters" of Nubian dance out there? Who teaches it? Anybody ever seen a workshop that teaches it?

The first person who comes to mind is Aisha Ali. I remember her talking about Nubian dance at a workshop. Dunno if she has videos out for it though.

I know that Faten Salama taught Nubian dance in New York a few years ago. The Egyptian Academy of Dance in New York brought her. That was a great workshop and she's a nice person! I took Faten's Nubian workshop a few weeks ago and it was AWESOME! I believe she has a DVD instructional on the topic as well.

I think a lot of the Nubian dance that's taught and performed today traces its lineage to the major Egyptian folkloric troupes (Reda and Qawmiyya), and thus is more "folkloric" than "folk". I had posted a thread a while back where a clip of Reda's Nubian dance raised a lot of questions for me about the gaping disconnect between what we are learning and performing and what is actually "folk," and the implications of cultural appropriation (but I don't want to resurrect that monster of a thread).

I guess I just wanted to throw out there that I think it's important to keep in the back of our minds that a lot of the "folk" dances that we learn and accept as "folk" are really theatrical folklore, and this is particularly the case with dances like Nubian, where most of dancers' exposure to it is coming from dancers from the theatrical folkloric troupes and their students (and that has been my primary exposure as well, so I'm in the same boat as everybody else).

FWIW, surf around on YouTube and there are some really good and interesting clips of actual Nubians doing Nubian dances; I've got some of these favorited on my YouTube channel (nisaasaintlouis). I'd post some clips right now but I'm at work and can't get to YouTube. Blasted work filters!!!

I have had a couple of workshops on Nubian awhile ago (although recently I did work with Outi on some Nubian Styling while I was in Cairo) . . . I believe Fatima of Sacramento occasionally teaches Nubian dance. Fatima's Belly Dance Studio and Instruction

Faten Salama teaches a Nubian workshop- the one in Milwaukee a few weeks ago was lots of fun- the Nubian workshop was my favorite part!

I have to agree totally w/Galatea & Amara about Faten Salama's Nubian Dance teaching = YEA!!!

Sahra Saeeda includes a Nubian segment in her Journey Through Egypt. This summer, she is taking her JTE4 people to Nubia, so I imagine that she will add some new ideas to her thoughts on Nubian dance after that.

Huh. So I wonder if it would be possible to get her down here to teach one then? And what she charges to sponsor her? I've never sponsored anyone, but if I were going to, this would be right up my alley. I have to say, I'm fascinated with Nubian, and have had very little exposure to it, though Samira Shuruk (hi!) was nice enough to give me a wonderful private lesson when I visited DC last.

I've seen those YouTube vids...they're great! I looked them up about a year ago & occassionally check back. I'll look to see if I can find that Nubian dvd ya'll mention, too...

If you ever get a chance to go to the Ahlan wa Sahlan festival, take Hamada Hossam's Nubian class. He is a real Nubian, a lifelong dancer, and a choreographer. (Was one of the original men in Reda Troupe, did the ensemble choreography for at least one Abdel Halim Hafez movie musical, etc.) His classes are always lots of fun - he tends to choose pop music such as Mohammed Mounir, and there's always a certain playful characteristic to his choreographic style.

I just emailed Ahmed Refaat recently about Nubian lessons (marta if you see this, tell him to email me back, I just need something in writing to show my professor so they know that homeboy is in town &/or willing to teach)

Ahmed has been dancing for a very long time, since childhood in one of the folk groups, and is really an artist in temperament. Also, he is nice and doesn't yell - a golden combination IMO.

Denise Enan taught a bit of Nubian at the workshop I attended. In fact, the afternoon of the 2nd day was all about that.

Basically anyone that's been in the Reda troupe or Kawmayya troupe will have some Nubian exposure as it's a part of the reportoire they HAVE to learn. Even DINA includes a Nubian part in her shows often - whereas most other direct folk influences are rather abcent in her shows.

Otherwise....

Sahra Saeeda - she's a good bet as she trained under Farida Fahmy and Mahmoud Reda directly and has had good reviews of her Nubian number that also is available on an IAMED video - the name escapes me (Roxxanne! HELP).

Can I add Ousama Emam? his Nubian is just fantastic !

My teacher, Khalidah (Chicago) performs and teaches Nubian. She does folkloric style not Reda troupe style tho. North African Dance Schedule- Khalidah's North African Dance Experience

Atef Farag of Cairo does Nubian also. Took a Nubian workshop when he was in the San Francisco area 2 or 3 years ago - wonderful!

leila of cairo taught a nubian workshop here on one of her last tours.

Although Sahra has alot of training by Farida and Mahmoud, she has gone to study Nubian dance with actual Nubian dancers!
She (and I have gone along for some of it) have studied with some dancers and teachers who are Nubian and perform in the various dance companies in Aswan. Have also been to weddings and danced with the Nubian women!
