Re: Shakira enta omri/ojas asi
It must be so hard to shimmy and sing at the same time. I dont think I could pull that off!

I like this video much better. It just shows Shakira dancing with the veil.

So...When she turns away from the mic at 3:30 ...I can still hear her singing with the same clarity as when she turns back to it at at 3:31. Granted it is only a second...but I really do think it is a lip synced performance.

Bassem Feghali sings Ojos Asi and shimmies at the same time too. ..l;,..l;, I think he looks more like Shakira than Shakira.

Re: Shakira enta omri/ojas asi
I think we're hearing backup singers at 3:30 because the tonal quality is different. The delivery is different from the album, but that doesn't mean there wasn't a recorded "backup track" used.

I loved it and I think playing oum kalthsoum at the beginning was a great way to introduce middle eastern music to an audience that may have never heard it before.

Re: Shakira enta omri/ojas asi
I had thought of that - it does expose a group to OK that may never hear it otherwise.... it just isn't for me.
Probably because I *especially* love Enta Omri.

If you look really close at her lips, they aren't really moving.

Holy helicopter arms, Batman!
Aside from that, I really can't say anything bad about Shakira. If it weren't for her, nothing would have piqued my interest in BD as a baby-dancer! I'm totally unashamed to make that confession ..l;,

Re: Shakira enta omri/ojas asi
gonna have to agree with souzan, personally in my opinion, i hate that when people think of bellydance they think of Shakira. shes not a professional dancer, shes a singer that uses movements from a dance, that is from "her" culture. And in my opinion, her mixed usage of bellydance and hip hop is confusing to what people think of then they think bellydance. like when she uses pelvic lefts and drops to crawl across the floor on her back.

I resent the confusion too! I've had too too many new students show up in class saying "I already know how to belly dance from watching Shakira and Beyonce'! I just want to learn a few new moves."
Needless to say, basic posture and arms alone busts their tails. That and sending them a few incredible vids of 'real' dancers via email.

Re: Shakira enta omri/ojas asi
^ Yes, that's just what they need!
That's the intro to "Whenever, Wherever" live and the rope is not tied; she's holding it. ;P
Assiyah, my hazy understanding is that she's not a BDer because among other things, it lacks the cultural aspect/representation, the music is not "real" ME music, the dancing is mostly fusion, and she throws BD-like moves here and there, and BD is "more than just the moves." hehe I've witnessed intense discussions on these subjects.
IMO, as a whole, Shakira makes a fantastic show, and if she spawned some horrid think-a-be dancers, it's as much her fault as a 6-week wonder from your (collective "you") class going "pro". She's never claimed to be a BDer and people get crazy ideas on their own (just near me there's a place saying "learn to BD like Shakira!" so that doesn't help). Even so, Shaki has evidently inspired, at least in part, some great ones too, like Satin and Mrsnj! I'm annoyed with misinformation and ego-inflated Nippletasslers, not Shaki.
I used to be naive, too (not an ego-inflated think-a-be, heaven forbid, but I did stereotype BD, at first as not family-friendly, and then after knowing Shakira, I paired it with her). I know much better now, of course, thanks to seeking genuine classes (inspired by Shaki) and partly because I'm such a lurk, lol.
Sorry I rambled!Last edited by Shakifan; 05-21-2009 at 04:53 PM.

Re: Shakira enta omri/ojas asi
my question wasnt completely serious. i was just trying to make a point that who are we to be judging whether or not someone else is a bellydancer? for all we know she considers herself to be one. and just cus her music is fusion doesnt mean she doesnt have a good understand of middle eastern music herself. as well, maybe it was a rumor, but didnt she take lessons from bozenka?

Re: Shakira enta omri/ojas asi
^ Ahh ok. I totally agree with you!
PS Bozenka was credited as one of her choreographers, as well as Myriam Eli, Farrah Khan, and others. I don't actually know of anybody credited as a teacher, but to teach a choreo you have to teach some of the dance form, though, right? Would crediting them as her teachers be obvious or erroneous?
