That was really kind of you, Kina, and respectfully and sensitively worded. It's obvious from your note that you were trying to raise her awareness of the potential repercussions in order to help her. Clearly she missed the point, but how could you have made it any clearer? It's awful that your intentions were misunderstood so drastically. Still, cheers to you for making the effort. You can lead a horse to water....

Thanks Zana , just feels like I stuck my nose into something that I shouldn't have. ..c:: It's just such a small community and she seems to love it so much.

The path to hell is paved with good intentions, I'm told, seems like I'm well on my way

You and me both, babe. At least we'll get to boogie like mad all the way down....

I have a hard time remembering sometimes that *I* know what I intended even if the other person didn't. It's the honest intention to be kind and helpful that counts, but it drives me just crazy (and makes me sad) that I can't control how it comes across. It's not like we go around sticking our fingers in everyone else's pies all the time, either, I wouldn't think.

(Jeez, can you tell this hit a nerve?)

Mmmm, pie. And a smooch for you.

    arm and arm

*sings (badly)* get down, boogie oogie oogie, get down

and yeah, pie....apple, ala mode... mmmmmmm

well, in this instance, I really agonized over whether to send the stupid pm or not.

My criteria is would I want to be told?

yes I would. and to bring this back to topic, I'd want to be told if I did something that looked horrible as well.

So, in my mind, I was treating someone as I would want to be treated.

I do feel awful that she felt threatened, it wasn't my intention in any way shape or form.

Also you risk injury doing it this way, so i really sdont understand. You either have to be really experienced, or not at all to do this move.

i saw nothing threatening in message. I will admit i like floorwork. what i don't like is dancers who come out wraped in several veils and in anyway shape or form unwrap themselves as if they were a present. seen more than seven veils used. also think if you are going to do a sword routine it should involve balancing it, not just dancing around the floor holding it. one thing i found impressive from for dancers by dancers, balancing on glasses.

Kina, nothing in that was threatening. It was an over reaction to being told that the person she was refering to might read it and know it was about her and could possibly say something to her in the future. It is all good.

I have only seen the glasses thing once and I was not very impressed. It may just be that it was not done well. I should check out some vids with it to see how I really feel about it.

I agree with the sword thing as well.

Re: Moves we shouldn't ever do?

the glasses freak me out ^^ it looks damn cool, but i spend my time picturing the glass snapping and cutting into the dancer's feet (eeek!!).
what's with the glasses, anyhoo? are they special, solid ones, or treated in a certain way? cos i'd never even try standing on the glasses we use to drink...

    maybe i'm just paranoid ..l;,

Re: Moves we shouldn't ever do?

I haven't done it in years and years but somewhere there's a video (yes, VHS) of me doing a candle dance atop glasses.....

I still have the glasses with my dance stuff. The vendor I bought them from is long gone, but they were sold for dancing. They look like Ice cream sundae glasses-or wine glasses with very thick stems. The are very wide at the opening and the 'base' (the bottom of the stem where you step) is almost as wide. Very important for stability!

I wouldn't dare use them now (too fat!), but at the time I weighed about 145 and there was no problem. It's actually very easy-how much moving around were you planning to do during the taxim, anyway? (that's the taxim section of the music not the appropriated name of a move; check other thread)

    1. I wouldn't worry about the PM kina. I thought it was cool of you to make it a PM and not start something publicly. Also I've gotten a couple PMs like that myself on bhuz from speaking my mind. (My reply was a bit different though-- I don't mind telling people what I think to their face)

    2. The glasses thing reminded me....I saw a dancer doing a routine standing on two stemware glasses and one of them broke. Fortunately her weight wasn't on that one at the time I guess she was just shifting her foot and bent the stem and caused the break. So she was able to step away from the glass and continue away from it. But yea, that would freak me out standing on something like that.

My 2 cents... the hair. I can't even bring myself to call it a move! ..c:: One is cute, but the excessiveness in the video...

Let me add why: it reminds me of the Exorcist for some reason... priest meet belly dancer.

Ourtroupe leader has always reminded us to keep our feet/stance classy, like Nordstrom's. Not wide stanced, like Wal-Mart... and if you DARE lean forward in a wide stance to do any dance move facing forwards getting near to or past 90 degrees... then she says you are in Dollar Store territory...

(this came up because we learned a choreo with spanish tambourine in it, and one move we have to hit the tambourine with our toes, and we are to slightly lean and slightly squat at the same time, to avoid being Dollar Store gals...)

Re: Moves we shouldn't ever do?

Dancing on glasses leaves me grumpy.

Speculation here: If the dancer manages to pucture her foot during the performance, she's going to want medical assistance to a situation that could have been prevented. For a medical person watching it isn't entertaining, it is a legal liability. I leave the moment I see glasses put on a stage. If they're going to be stupid, they can be stupid by themselves. Let the gloved paramedics deal with it.

Then of course there is the biohazard the blood would create. Not good. Hope other dancers are wearing shoes.

Of course others are more than welcome to disagree.

There's a video on YouTube where a dancer crosses herself just before stepping onto the glasses. I had to laugh. Don't know if she was afraid of getting hurt or just not doing it well...l;,
