    Zal El Assal in Galabeya?

I am doing a stage performance at a belly dance event and I'm sort of sick of all of my fancy costumes. I wanted to keep it simple and folksy and performing an a galabeya - a pinstripe dress with a coin hip scarf. But the piece I'm thinking of performing is Zay El Assal, the Hossam Ramzy version, which alternates between a more classical and folksy sound (to describe it really badly). What do you guys think? Can you pull off wearing a galabeya to just about anything? Or are some songs just too sharki?

    Here's Sabah singing the original.

    It's a Baligh Hamdi composition.
I think the original has enough folklore components that it would be fine.

Yes thanks I know the video. The conclusion I came to is that I don't *feel* the galabeya for this piece. Or at least the version I have. :)

With this song, if it's fully orchestrated, like the Sabah video, then I don't "hear" galabeya. The music, although it has some Saidi phrases, is too sophisticated for a galabeya presentation. If the version you want to use is by a smaller music ensemble, with, say, a prominent percussion presence, then you could go for the galabeya to pick up on the more folksy sounding percussion. My recommendation for a complex music piece like this one would be a "Saidi dress", very much like what Sabah is wearing in the video.
