    Entering to big Masmoudi?

I thought I read somewhere that once upon a time, it was common to enter the stage to big Masmoudi and only later was this replaced by more common entrance rhythms like Malfouf.

Am I nuts or is this really the case?

I am thinking of editing a song to enter with big Masmoudi which is why I'm asking.

Has anyone done this or seen it done? Tips on steps to enter with?

I am not sure whether a masmoudi entrance was generally common in the past, but this clip of Taheya Carioca immediately sprang to mind:

It certainly works for her in this case!!!!

This is an intriguing question...I hope others will chime in. I loooove me a good masmoudi kabir.

Thanks for posting that!! It does work for her.

Interesting that she ignores the heavy drum accents in her intro. I think that for me, I would find it hard to do that - I would want to hit at least some of those juicy drum accents.

Also, I now need a fringe skirt like that one ..g.:

I tend to agree...it's hard not to want to hit those big accents...although big masmoudi, with the right orchestration (like in this clip) has a really sweepy, swoopy, flowing feeling that I think works really well for traveling and turning like Taheya does here.

OMG I know!!! Me too! I love so many of the costumes in those old movies...

Yes - in the clip it looks quite natural. I like it and it will also be an interesting variation on the norm.

I think I will try to use come combination of flowing and sweeping with the instrumentation and acknowledging the drums. I'm thinking arabesque-y stuff and turns and such.

    Thanks Nisaa!

Our troupe has a dance that opens with a very strong masmoudi. We enter to a part of "Quiero Mas Moodi" from Mafufo's Drumsongs for Dancers.
We have started our show with this dance, and it is very powerful and attention grabbing!

What kind of step do you enter with?

Ha! I was thinking exactly the same thing - she almost seemed to be ignoring the rhythm! I couldn't do that either...

Using some of the pairs of heavy beats for dramatic walking steps with beautiful arms and filling between with more flowing, turning movement to mark out and claim your stage would work nicely. You could also accentuate the heavy beats with one or two very sharp fast turns and then stop on a dime and fill with some lovely undulations and shimmies.... oh the possibilities :-)
