Re: What were/are the 3 most difficult...
For me, it's
1.) hands - relaxing them, keeping them pretty - I still work on this. I have one hand that tends to curl up.
2.) Not over-dancing the music - I really enjoy the music but as my teacher said, it's so different to my ears that I don't know what to pay attention to whereas an Egyptian could be like "Oh yeah, this old song" and choose which parts they want to emphasize - I end up trying to dance/emphasize ALL of it.
3.) stage fright. I think I have overcome this but it was a long hard road.

Re: What were/are the 3 most difficult...
Resurrecting this old thread.
For those who answered before: Do you still struggle with the same things or are there new challenges?
I have a major problem which I notice in every of the 3 things I struggle with most: my back. I have scoliosis and my right side is much stronger. (Yeah, I'm working on that. Have been working on that since the age of 12)
1) Incorporating my left side at least almost as much as my right side.
2) Shimmies: because my right side is stronger it tends to be faster than the left side. Also because of my back I'm always under tension, it's soooo hard for me to relax those muscles. I swear I hurts more than working them extremely hard.
3) Movements with twists, I can do them but my sacroiliac joint just protests in agony if I do them for longer, let alone drilling them.

Re: What were/are the 3 most difficult...
Hi Linda! I too have scoliosis, and I've been a belly dancer for many years. I found that I was able to overcome the effect of the scoliosis on my dance technique, HOWEVER, I did feel weaker on one side than the other even though I could make both sides look the same. Drilling evenly on both sides didn't really help balance the weakness.
What HAS helped me was going to a massage therapist who does myofascial release. She's been my therapist a little over a year, and incorporates both "regular" massage (which targets the muscles) and myofascial release (which targets the fascia) into every massage. She has spent a LOT of time working on the scoliosis parts of my back, and it has made a huge difference in my back health. I'm much stronger on the weak side than I used to be.
The key is to combine both massage and exercise. After releasing the fascia, it's important to exercise and use those muscles, to help them find their new path. This will lead to a few days of stiff muscles as they get used in ways they're not accustomed to. The muscles become steadily stronger as a result of this.
