Zar part in drum solo
This may be a bit rambly...
I picked my drum solo for the upcoming Maqam BD competition - Drum Solo #2 off of Nourhan Sharif's Arabic Rhythms Vol 1. The song ends with a loooooong ayoub section that start of slow and gets very fast. My teacher has suggested that I do some zar-like movements, so I've been looking at lots of zar clips online this evening.
All the clips I am finding, though, seem to be full on, traditional zar. Since this is only one small part of a full drum solo, I want acknowledge the ayoub with a nod to the zar, but not turn it into me having a religious/spiritual experience in front of the judges. Sort of like where there's a saiidi part in an Oriental piece, and you do a few saiidi moves but don't go hardcore folkloric. Does anyone know of any clips where a dancer is shown doing "zar lite" (for lack of a better term) as a piece within a piece? Or have any suggestions of how to tone it down a bit while still getting the point across?Last edited by laura 2; 07-10-2009 at 08:24 PM.

Re: Zar part in drum solo
Jillina's pink snake drum solo has a nice zar bit (on the first BDSS DVD). I remember one of her choreo videos had a drum solo with a zar bit at the end, too, but I don't remember which one (not the drum solo one).
Saida had one on youtube, too, that had nice khaleegy and zar sections, I'll see if I can find that one for you.

oops, never mind about the Saida one, it only had khaleegy but not zar. It's the Jillina pink snake one I'm remembering as having both.

Re: Zar part in drum solo
Here's the other Jillina one I remembered, it's from her Level 2 choreo DVD. The sound is all outta whack, so ignore it altogether and just watch her do zar moves starting around 4:00 (or maybe this one's in your library somewhere?

This one is a little more... restrained. Zar starts shortly after the 6 minute mark. (khaleegy in the middle). I use this drum solo in class to demonstrate use of zar & khaleegy moves to acknowledge rhythms.

Re: Zar part in drum solo
Now that I think of it, didn't Sonia do zar in her drum solo with Issam on one of the early BDSS vids, too?

Re: Zar part in drum solo
Great clip! There's nothing like doing a long drum solo with a live band. I used to do something similar. At the end of the drum solo, I'd drop into a Turkish drop. I'd then spin myself to the front and give the ayoub a nod. I was never much of a hair tosser though so I'd go around in a circle mostly doing shoulders and just a little hair. Once I was standing again, I did mostly hip work.

Just be careful! I've stopped doing big neck circles very often because I've given myself whiplash a few times. There's nothing like having a crunchy neck!

Re: Zar part in drum solo
Maiada is fabulous. But the Argentinians are so into Zaar performances and I kind of get tired seeing the ayoub being answered always with hair flips and tosses...is there nothing else that can be done? I guess spins...

Re: Zar part in drum solo
In Tammilyn Dalal's new DVD she teaches a nice zar section that lasts for a couple of minutes. She does do some hair tossing, but also some alot of other varied movements. It's available on Netflix if you're a subscriber...

Shoo Shoo Amin
I just downloaded a zar clip with Shoo Shoo Amin. NOT the Westernized version of ayoub with hair flip and tosses. Video may need to process.
